What I'm going with based on clips (and popular tropes): Both popular at the University, white shirt was a playboy who flirted a lot but then fell in love with the girl and got serious with her. Girl dumped him and said it was cause of red shirt (whether she implied cheating or she just had a crush on him, no idea). He's pissed and assumed cheating and confronted red shirt. Red shirt liked white shirt before he got a gf but didn't make a move cause he didn't think white shirt would be serious. In the argument he kisses white shirt in a mix of anger and attraction and proposes (sarcastically) he take the place of gf. White shirt agreed partially cause he was into it but mostly out of pettiness. Red shirt goes along with it because he has feelings for white shirt, time passes white shirt starts liking red shirt more/for real. But white shirt is embarrassed about the relationship cause he's worried what people will think of him and cause of how it started, red shirt has to worry about whether he'll go back to his playboy ways.

So how i understood this tralier. He has a thing for the guy whose gf broke up with him, and possibly had a fling in the past. When said crush confronts him he throws out the idea of replacing the gf on a whim not thinking that he would actually agree to it. So secretly he is happy but has to hide it and look like he doesn't like it from the get go.
