Always knew Arijit sir is realised, his compositions on his own works are testimonials to it. Don't know if he will ever find his true disciples but I promise myself I will be one. It will take me striving beyond I can imagine but Arijit sir is widely misunderstood as a singer . He isn't, his singing is just a way for him to express the gift he has. In reality, he only sings in Bollywood for others, his fans and most importantly to run his social services where he strives to do whatever possible for the upliftment of society without any credits. Handful of his creations through Oriyon are what he is in reality. The perfect example of being relevant to the times we exist attaining all the name and fame but being untouched by it as he has truly realised in the end nothing matters.

(Part 1) “Rihaa” means “to be free, liberate” and Arijit sir and Koyel ma’am have produced a very spiritual piece of work with some deep, beautiful meanings. I’d like to share some of my insights and interpretation. As the title of the song suggests, this piece of work addresses the concept of liberation, or self-realisation or enlightenment, however you want to call it. The music video begins with a man who is busy in his work. But apart from his work, his mind keeps wandering after anything new, constantly having new thoughts. He is a “prisoner of the mind” as it says in the lyrics. His mind is controlled by his feelings, experiencing periods of extreme emotion - sometimes very happy, sometimes very sad. That is how the mind works - unless we learn to control it, we are the slaves of our own mind. But soon he begins to wonder what the mind is seeking - he contemplates if there is actually more to life. And of course, in Indian Spirituality there is more to human life than just eating, working and sleeping - the purpose of human life is to manifest the Divinity within. To describe very briefly, Indian Spirituality says that within each living being there is the Paramatma, Atma and the Jivatma. The Paramatma is the Divine Himself, present everywhere, in all living beings. The Atma is part of the Paramatma, and it is the same in quality as the Paramatma but smaller in quantity. The Jivatma is our individual soul, the reflection of the Atma within an individual. Our Atma is our “true self”, and this true Self usually gets veiled behind our false ego in our daily lives - the Jivatma identifies with physical attributes such as mind and body rather than its Divine essence. So our spiritual purpose is therefore to unite our Jivatma to our Atma, raise our consciousness and realise our true position in the universe, liberating ourselves (hence “Rihaa”). Enlightenment, or self-realisation is when we have realised this universal Truth and “come into contact” with the Divine, where we experience true happiness and bliss. Coming back to the music video, after he is contemplating the meaning of life we come to the chorus “Mujhe apna le. Teri rooh mein mujhko mila, karle tu rihaa” which can be translated as “Make me yours. Make me one with your soul. And set me free”. We can see that he is seeking for liberation, praying to the Divine to help him in this spiritual journey. During this chorus we see that in his imagination, when his mind is wandering, he meets a fairy. I interpret the spiral on the fairy’s forehead as the “third eye”. It seems to me that this fairy is some sort of spiritual being, maybe a spiritual guide to the man. Then at 2:00 we come across the first quotation in the song that is “Think like a proton. Be positive.”. When practicing spirituality one of the things we try to do is to see the best in everyone and everything - see the positive in every situation because there is always something to learn. Believe me, everything happens for a reason, and whatever situation the Divine puts you through, it is always for the best. Usually every situation brings you an opportunity to grow. It is all part of the Divine’s plan. Then immediately afterwards at 2:03 we see the next quotation that is “All power is within you” - this is literally true because the Paramatma is within all of us and with the Divine’s blessings we can achieve anything we want. If you have the aspiration and are sincere in your spiritual journey, then success is guaranteed. And this is not just limited to spirituality, even in everyday life if we are sincere then we will achieve what we put our minds to - and this sincerity, determination all comes from within. (Part 2 in the reply section)

(Part 2) In the next verse of the song we see that the man is feeling very restless and one of the lyrics translates to “your absence makes me ill”. I interpret this as that feeling of frustration when you feel you aren’t making any spiritual progress, yet you are yearning for Divine contact. We then come across the third quotation at 2:20 which is “It is simple to be happy but it is very difficult to be simple.” In this material world we often base our happiness on material objects or other people. For example, one may feel happy when one finally buys their dream car, but then let’s say whilst driving that dream car one receives the news of the death of a loved one, immediately that feeling of happiness subsides. So, the car is no longer the source of happiness. True happiness comes from within. So, the way I interpret the quotation is that material happiness can be easily obtained, but living a simple life, realising that all these material objects are temporary and have no value after death, can be a difficult process. At the same time this quotation is seen, there is a lyric which roughly translates to “the notes of your tune run through my veins”, and I see this as even though he is frustrated with his seemingly lack of spiritual progress, he still has the aspiration as this lyric seems to suggest he is constantly thinking about the Divine. In the lyrics again he mentions there is a void within him, he feels lonely. Maybe it is again that feeling of not making enough spiritual progress, feeling incomplete. Or it could be that he feels lonely on this spiritual journey, as everyone else is still distracted by other things in life. He may be desiring for association with other people who are also on this spiritual journey. During this lyric we see the next quotation at 2:36 which is “Difference is an illusion. Everything is One.” This is very profound. This quotation means that in this world of Maya, illusion, we see everyone and everything as separate entities and objects, when in reality, the whole universe is a manifestation of the same, One Divine - the same Paramatma resides in all of us. If we learn to see others as souls and not just people, the whole world would be such a beautiful place; no discrimination, no inflicting pain upon others, no war. During this same scene the next lyric is “Tu mile jo main kho jao, tujhme khud hi ko pao” which translates to “I will be lost upon finding you, discovering myself in you.” Again, relating to the concept of enlightenment - finding your soul, Atma, and realising the ultimate Truth, realising the Divine - lost in happiness and bliss. In the next section of the music video we see his daily struggles of making this spiritual journey. At 3:11 he writes “I will work like a selfless master. I will love everything. I will be liberated.”, displaying his aspiration and determination whilst singing the lyric “khud ko sikhata hoon (I teach myself)” . Immediately afterwards at 3:12 we see in his diary “I just found myself” but he sings the lyric “Khud bhool jata hoon (And then fail to recollect)”, showing the arduous process of this spiritual journey. When the chorus is playing with the lyrics “Mujhe apna le. Teri rooh mein mujhko mila, karle tu rihaa” we see the words of the quotation making patterns. At 3:22 it makes the infinity symbol, signifying the infiniteness of the Divine. During these patterns it also makes that spiral pattern, connecting back to the fairy and third eye. Then we hear the Bengali rap section of the song, in which the struggles of his spiritual journey are being described, dreaming of that liberation - but initially he seems to be dancing, suggesting that these struggles are not a big deal to him and it will be worth it in the end. Then he sits down and meditates and during his meditation we see him going through space, in a direction that seems to be “upwards”. There is a lyric which translates to “I will pull myself against the flow”, meaning the flow and distractions of material human life. The next lyric translates to “I will raise myself to meet you” - talking about raising his consciousness as part of this process, metaphorically described by his moving “upwards” through space. There is another lyric that translates to “Let me soak in your infinite kindness”, again referring to the infinite quality of the Divine, His love and mercy. Again, the fairy makes an appearance, larger in size and welcoming him with open arms, and he flies towards her. Then it seems as if he returns to Earth, falling through the sky. But he closes his eyes and wings appear, at first, he dives but then pulls himself up and flies upwards. This might symbolically show how, maybe with spiritual guidance from the fairy, he has learnt to believe in himself (closing his eyes and forming wings) and learn how to pick himself up from a fall (diving then flying upwards). We see him linking hands with the fairy, looking into her eyes - maybe in gratitude for her help. Finally, his mind returns to his material body and he wakes up from his meditation and we see the fairy disappearing into his heart - maybe symbolising the Paramatma, or guide being within you. Or, this whole scene might even symbolise him attaining liberation, being enlightened. For him, he may have seen this fairy as the Divine, because the Divine comes in many forms. The form which you believe in does not matter, as long as there is a faith in the Divine - the end goal is the same. In the final scene at 5:21 we see him playing with a football, looking content, and we see the final quotation which is “We do not see things as they are. We see them as we are.” This quotation is very true because whatever we say and do is often a reflection of what is inside us. So, if we are a person who gossips and judges other people a lot, we will naturally assume others do the same and therefore experience the same. But if we are kind and compassionate, we will see the kindness and compassion in others too. When you find happiness and beauty within yourself, the world around you will also seem like a nice place. As for this scene, if we take it that he is liberated (if not, even if he has made significant spiritual progress), he will realise that everything around him is a manifestation of the Divine - he will see the Divine everywhere in everything, just like he found the Divine within himself when he got liberated. And with that, I conclude my comment. This is only my interpretation and some points may not be what Arijit sir and Koyel ma’am intended.
