Much about my life has been affected by Beatles music - many songs have moved me profoundly. Lately I've been on a sojourn of deep appreciation for Ray Davies of the Kinks - it's been heart-warming to see how he's been lionized of late as a foundational talent of the era. Just now, listening to Di Meola performing Eleanor Rigby, I was for the first time ever thunderstruck by the realization that the voice and idiom that McCartney wrote it in was VERY influenced by Davies - it could just as easily have been written and sung by him. Gives me shivers...

Eleanor Rigby has to be one of my favourite songs by the Beatles. beautifully played my hat goes off to you🥂 I came across you just before covid and realised I missed an eternity of guitar mastery. Whoa. I worshipped Al since Romantic Warrior -- yep, I listened to it when it came out -- and tried my damndest to play like him. Never made that, but kind of lost touch with Al over the years after Cielo et Tierra. So I come back and find this . . . Brilliant arrangement from Al. Next for you Al is Paul Simon "You can call me Al". Very tempted to get the vinyl version of this to sit next to the RTF and solo albums. The CD cover has 8 sides of info & photos, so I was adequately satisfied. Very interesting arrangements and beautiful mixing.

Shame the 'cello wasn't higher in the mix on Eleanor Rigby as it naturally imbues a "lonely" sound. The accordion is an amazing and left-field addition that works well with my ears. Beautifully recorded...kudos to sound crew. Al has not been lazy.....

Yes, but may be also with some instrumental rock virtuosos, e.g. Paul Gilbert, with Steve Vai Al Di Meola already played several jams, etc.? IMHO there is a bit of convergence between rock virtuosos and jazz, both have deep knowledge about music and are very advanced technically. Sometimes the differences of harmony, chords can be interesting and refreshing. Also underrated great rock virtuoso MA Batio, he play beautiful for me jazz ballad: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4TLk2t9iLycZtE He's known as superfast metal rock player but may be he should play often more slowly with such great feeling like that? BTW he even playing extremely quickly plays very precisely like Al Di Meola do.
