Hope you enjoy my reaction to Season One Episode Four of the The Last Of Us! Things got a little more complicated in this one and I was lost for a second, not gonna lie. Then on a rewatch, I was embarrassed about the things that confused me. I think I've got it all down now and I'm excited for episode five!!

The beefcake magazine was hilarious and when Ellie asked Joel why the pages were stuck together, he had an out of body experience. Lol!!

I loved the choice to focus on Ellie's reaction when she shot Bryan. And I LOVED the choice to drag out Bryan's demise. It'd a perfectly horrible creative choice. Just makes the violence feels real because it's messy and doesn't make you feel particularly great even if one can argue Bryan had it coming (and I'd say he did!). It gave off a lot of TLoU2-gameplay vibes.

Thank goodness the spoiler was minor and yes, a lot of people did put that together. Still, I’ve been meaning to tell you: STOP LOOKING UP THINGS ONLINE. You WILL get spoiled. Everything you need to understand is in the show. And if you don’t get something immediately you’ll figure out later (especially as a reactor who edits her own videos and thus effectively watches every episode twice or more). And that’s fine. This obsession people have with fully and perfectly getting everything in every episode is odd. It’s ok to be wrong. It’s ok to misunderstand things. It’s ok to miss things. It’s a TV show, not an exam!

They're fleshing out the "bandit" storyline more than the game did, but the clues in this episode would indicate they overthrew the Fedra forces and took over or left the QZ. Kathleen lost her brothe, who was evidently part of some rebel group that Fedra was looking into. I'd guess that might have been the final trigger for the takeover.

I mean the game fleshed it out just as much but in a totally different way. The town had long since fallen in the game. If you listen to the banter between the hunters in the game as well as reading the notes and things you pick up, you'll hear the story.

In an episode full of great moments, my favorite moment was Joel standing guard at night so that Ellie will be safe from any potential danger and can sleep soundly They also used a little sting of music from the game that I like quite a lot

Ellie saving Joel was handled differently in the game, but in the show she really got to see how personal and ugly violence can be. I think there was more emotional impact showing it this way. Joel laughing at Ellie's pun at the end was perfect. He'd stayed up all night the night before guarding her, was exhausted, wired on caffeine and adrenaline all day, and you know how punch drunk funny things can get when you're exhausted like that. It's no wonder he didn't hear Henry & Sam coming. Not only was he sleeping on his "good" ear, but laughing like that before going to sleep had to be such a huge tension release, he was probably sleeping more soundly than he had in years without alcohol or drugs.

The opening scene of the episode felt VERY Taxi Driver-esque to me. Alone, playing with the gun, looking in the mirror. But of a power fantasy (and I love how the show then breaks that childish notion of being a badass with a gun later by introducing the very awful realness of the violence). And funnily enough, Game Ellie has canonically watched Taxi Driver based upon an INCREDIBLY obscure line of dialogue that I have to imagine not too many people know. I've yet to meet or see anyone talk about this lol In the DLC, you can come across a "triple phoenix" mask. If you wear it and press square a couple times, Ellie would say a line from the movie, "Ay, you talking to me??" lol

13:02 in the game Joel & Ellie (mainly Joel. Ellie might kill the occasional guy, or just throw bottles or bricks to stun people) do exactly this: go up against the entire city full of hunters. We kill a BIG chunk of these guys. 50 people, EASY lol It makes for fantastic gameplay lol. But it would be bordering horrific & tedious in a show. So I like the decision to give the faceless enemy NPCs a very human story & characters. They do have a bit of a backstory (that one can gleam from notes, the environments, the NPC chatter. It's basically people of a QZ rising up against & overthrowing FEDRA in a violent coup), but no real characters with names. I'm quite certain that Kathleen is based off this note Joel finds written by a grieving mother called Eva. She picks up arms and swears revenge on FEDRA because they killed her son just because he protested them. Upon reading this note Joel says (one of the scant few times he comments after reading a note), "Well, with that kind of thinking, no one wins." Very much looking forward to playing the game so I can playthrough this section of the story (in the game it takes place in Pittsburgh. Here, it's in Kansas City. They made the change because they could convincingly sell Calgary off as Kansas City more than Pittsburgh)

I really enjoy your lengthy analysis at the end of your videos! It's nice to hear what someone thinks of what they just watched rather than just ending the video immediately. My take on the "bandits" (which I think were called Hunters in the game) is that they overthrew FEDRA in their QZ. That's why Ellie asks where FEDRA is when she has Joel stop the truck outside the QZ just before they're ambushed. The QZ gates were open and there were no FEDRA guards yet there's an ambush set up just outside the QZ which, presumably, wouldn't happen if FEDRA were still there. That also explains why they have all of the military vehicles and gear since they would have access to everything FEDRA had in the QZ now that FEDRA isn't there. I'm really curious to see what's in that building they sealed off. I have an idea of what it might be and I really, really hope it's what I think it is. If so, it should make the next episode or two very interesting.

In the game sometimes enemies will beg you for their lives. If you don't kill them though, they will eventually get back up and attack you again. It's nice to see the show taking those gameplay bits and bringing them to life.

It's kind of funny to hear about criticisms of episode 3. In my opinion, and the opinion of pretty much everyone I follow and trust, it was very good -- maybe even one of the greatest episodes of TV. It's fair to say that the people down-voting it aren't the people whose opinions I value.

Yeah tread lightly because there are even bigger spoilers dealing with the spoiler you already saw. Kathleen mentions she blames Henry for her brother's death btw, i.e. the strong emotion there against Henry isn't because Sam is her kid or anything afaik.

They're just a group of people who overthrew FEDRA. 1. Joel and Ellie saw the FEDRA QZ abandoned and doors wide open. 2. Kathleen mentioned FEDRA beat his brother to death, and 3 FEDRA, as seen in episode 1 have a uniform.

The show does a podcast following each episode. In it they said the whole series is about love after the Bill and Frank episode. Cargo started with the Fireflies smuggling her out using Joel and Tess. Joel just lost 3 of the 4 closest to him people of the last 20 years in 2 days. He's not going to be very open to Ellie right now just because of those recent events.

In regards to people saying "Whats the point, they just died in the end?" I'm sorry but they're clearly either not paying attention or just want to watch sensless Zombie Killing ACTION!!! lol.. Everyone dies in the end. It was a beautiful love story, a message of hope in a hopeless world. This show is SO fucking dark.. if anything this episode stands as a beacon that there is still something worth fighting for in this world. Hope and the experience of love.. as fleeting and inpermanent as it may be.. It's all we have when we have nothing else.

Seems to me the show is good at giving the information you need at the right times. You aren’t really supposed to have clear ideas of what is happening at this point. Kathleen is brand new to all of us. She is not in the video game. So none of us know her motives just yet.

You said about homophobia and I have heard that mentioned from a few reactors. I don't care that they are gay, straight 2 men 2 women wouldn't matter. If someone wants to complain there's a much more valid complaint, maybe not even complaint but critique and thats what I see wrong with it is how quickly they get together. They portray Bill as someone who doesnt trust anyone we see it with Joel and Tess and they had to be there everybit as long as Frank was when they slept together. Bill doesn't seem like he would have dropped his guard in like 2 hours of letting Frank shower and making him a meal. If they would have had Frank was hurt from falling in the hole and Bill let him stay for a week to heal and they progressed into love story after they were around each other a little longer I think it would have fit vetter with Bill's untrusting character

The purpose to episode 3 is to show there is a difference between surviving in that world and living for something. It's pretty simple. And hopefully body burning Joel learns from the lesson passed on by Bill. This is how nested stories work. The nested story informs or illustrates the greater theme of the main story. In this case Joel is Bill those first four years before he found Frank and something to live for.

The last episode had more to do with Joel's character than many realize. Even if you haven't seen him. Bill and Joel are both bitter and alone. However, the development of Bill clearly showed the differences, as one of them was willing to let a person into his life. As a result, despite the almost similar mindsets at the beginning, Bill got a long full and happy life. Joel, on the other hand, is stuck. So yes, the episode was important and not just because of the farewell letter at the end. It showed that there is hope, even if Joel doesn't have one yet. This episode showed that people are important to be happy. We are usually herd animals. Kathleen doesn't exist in the game and these enemies were just NPCs to kill. So no spoiler. The new group are ordinary people who have resisted the suppression of Fedra. Just like the Fireflys did. Just these people here were successful. As I understand it, Henry is responsible for Kathleen's brother death by betrayal. That's what the conversation between Kathleen and the doctor revealed. I guess he betrayed them because Fedra threatened Sam. I think Kathleen's brother was the leader of the resistance movement and she was probably the mom of the troops. That's the only reason I can imagine why the group follows her at all, so insecure and focused on revenge she seems. The bottom line is that she has absolutely understandable reasons. Just as good reasons as anyone else on the show and Joel wouldn't do anything else. In fact Joel did the same. He attacked, robbed and murdered more or less innocent people. Shows again that no group is good or bad. Kathleen's bearded right hand is Tommy's voice actor in the game.
