I don't think it is right to call Rachel irrelevant. Jacob loved Rachel so much that he was willing to work an additional seven years for Laban in order to marry her. Also, Rachel is the mother of Joseph and Benjamin. Joseph was able to save Egypt from complete famine. Additionally, out of the twelve tribes, two came from Joseph, (Ephraim and Manasseh). Therefore, Rachel's importance shouldn't be disregarded.
