I don't know the answer, but I do notice the 3 coming up in a lot of card tricks. Also there's something about people always using an odd number when they make something up (like cheating on taxes for example) something like 90% of ppl use an odd number when they have to fabricate something. Not sure if it's related, but I find it interesting

The answer is that this is a complete red herring to add to the seeming complexity of how this is done--in other words, to get the viewer to wonder this exact thing.
