Dear Meryl, we Italians do put carrots in homemade tomato sauce: minced carrots, along with minced onions and minced celery, are the base for "soffritto", which we use for start making Bolognese and Ragù. So, don't worry this much :)

Carrots in tomato sauce are actually quite normal. After olive oil and garlic add your canned plum tomatoes, tomato paste and water, dump in a red onion (halved) and couple of carrots (halved), rind of Parmesan, your aromatic (stalk of oregano). Cook it slowly for 30min or till the carrots are tender. Remove the veg, scrape off rind, and aromatic. Add fresh basil, salt and pepper and mix in pasta with some pasta water. Mix it over high heat and serve topped with more basil and Parmesan. Maybe toss some rocket in a little olive oil and balsamic vinegar for the side.
