It makes sense to loan art pieces to museums. While they hold the piece they are responsible for it, they guard and maintain the piece. This also makes the piece more established which in turn increases its value. Essentially museums function as banks that display their assets. Holding a piece like that at home is ludicrous. It would just make you a target and the insurance costs would go through the roof.
