way back.. a few hundred years ago I think, America issued a standardised way of speaking English 'their way' as 'easier' to understand, read and write it too.. true.. A man went through the language and sorted out spellings and pronounciation and so they end up saying today DE PO instead of Depot today, as one such more modern example.. as with all languages, American English is always evolving. It didn;t happen by chance. My theory is with all the immigration to the country, albeit later on than the first settles where English was a second language that always had a part too.
@leavingitblank9363

@@mariahoulihan9483 Okay, that's just a load of BS, about some guy sorting through the language and decreeing how it would be pronounced. Never happened. At least not in any way that had any impact. @nicoledb341, what is it you think people in the U.S. can't follow? You seem to be confused. British English isn't taught in the U.S., so obviously it wouldn't be any more familiar than any other accent. The U.S. doesn't have a lot of imported TV programs because there's already way too many local programs. They don't play cricket in the U.S., so no reason to understand that game. People in the U.S. can't call football "football" because then there would be two entirely different games with the same name, so it's called "soccer". Neither is rugby. (I'm confused why you can't follow that.) Do you have any idea how narrow-minded and nationalistic you sounded?

I can understand Lineker, being of his generation. I think it's difficult to explain to people born post 1990 just how absolutely huge F A Cup Final day was from 1960-1990. The build up started as early as the evening before the game where live TV shows might do little bits related to tomorrow's big game. The morning kids Tv live show would certainly feature the cup final in some way before the real build up started on Grandstand. It was so much more high profile than winning the league that you could arguably go out and vox pop 100 people at the end of May and more would be able to tell you who won the cup than won the league. The kids in the playground never dreamt of winning the European Cup {Champions League} or the First Division {Premier League}. They dreamt of scoring the winner in the Cup Final {F A Cup} I can remember the excitement the first time my team got to the cup final in my lifetime. They won the league the following year for the first time in my lifetime and it was, yay, great, were the Champions, but not a patch on watching them win the cup the year before. On winning the League title with Leeds, Billy Bremner said he would gladly trade it in for a Cup Winner's medal. Imagine someone today saying they'd rather win the F A Cup than the Premier League!

Yup, two Ewoks stand on the pitch and the cricketers have to run between them. If the bowler (pitcher) knocks an Ewok unconscious their team get an extra 100 points. I thought everyone knew that.

Gary's amazement that he has to explain football is in itself amusing. Only a tiny number of people in my family circle have any interest in football and viewing figures for "big" live matches don't really bear out the view that the game is a national obsession in which the vast majority of Brits are interested. For example the TV audience for current set of matches peaked at about 17m - which is a little under 25% of our current UK population. For modern times, that is an appreciable TV audience - however, it's not indicative of a national obsession. I personally regard professional football as something based on a nice game that got totally and comprehensively trashed by money (much of it dirty money). I recoil from the corruption involved in it and the mindless tribalism it creates under the false flag of "sport". Good luck to those who like it, but it's important to always bear in mind that a significant number of your fellow countryfolk are simply not interested.

Presumably that’s 17m televisions/internet streams rather than people (how could they possibly know exactly how many people are watching?). As most families and many friends will watch a major game together, there will be a _lot_ more viewers than that.

Except I have noticed that in Wikipedia articles on British people, it very frequently includes a statement on what teams they support. I never see that for people from any other place. Perhaps it's just more competitive/loyal for those who DO follow compared to other places.
