SOUTHERN BLOOD serves as a remarkable final testament from an artist whose contributions have truly shaped rock & roll throughout the past four decades. Gregg Allman's first all-new recording since 2011's GRAMMY® Award-nominated solo landmark, LOW COUNTRY BLUES, the album is among the most uniquely personal of the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer's career, an emotionally expansive collection of songs written by friends and favorite artists including Jackson Browne, Willie Dixon, Jerry Garcia & Robert Hunter, Lowell George and Spooner Oldham & Dan Penn, meant to serve as a salutary farewell to his legion of devoted fans and admirers. Allman collaborated on his closing project with manager and dear friend Michael Lehman and GRAMMY® Award-winning producer Don Was, a longtime acquaintance and staunch supporter committed to helping the rock icon actualize his very specific aspirations.
About GREGG ALLMAN:
Gregg Allman was undoubtedly among rock and roll's greatest and most significant artists, his soul-fired and still utterly distinctive voice one of the defining sounds in all of American music. From his founding role in the one and only Allman Brothers Band to his long and storied solo career, Allman consistently proved himself to be an iconic singer/songwriter and exceptional practitioner of the American blues tradition. Allman accrued a remarkable list of honors over his five decade career, including the ABB's 1995 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award at the 54th Annual GRAMMY® Awards. Allman detailed his brilliant career in 2012's acclaimed memoir, My Cross To Bear. Now available in both hardcover and paperback, the New York Times bestseller chronicles an astonishing life and creative journey burdened by unimaginable loss, alcohol and drug addiction, told with clear-eyed wisdom and sharp hindsight.

I don't think it is overstated to say “I hope you’re haunted by the music of my soul when I’m gone” is as significant and profound a lyric as "And in the end, the love to take is equal to the love you make" which ironically is taken from "The End", the last song all four Beatles played on together. This is a REAL album, like we used to wait for and buy immediately when it came out back in the 60's & 70's. IMHO, the album of the year. Dan Was, producer of the year.

I bought this CD when It came out and when I retired a friend gave me the LP as a gift. For the longest time after buying the CD, I wouldn't (couldn't) listen to it. As an Allman Brothers Band fan of five decades, I really was having trouble accepting that Gregg was gone. Finally, on a road trip to the place where I grew up (about a three-and-a-half hour drive) I gave in and listened to it all the way through. Then I listened to it all the way through again. After the second listen, it dawned on me that every song was a piece of Gregg's life, just as Michael Lehman and Don Was said in this interview. It still hurts to listen to these deeply personal songs. They seem to have a special meaning for me and the things that are going on in my life right now, as I am sure they do for many, many others. Since I got my first record player when I was about 10 years old and to this day many years later, NO ONE has ever musically expressed what I often feel better than Gregg Allman with his voice and songs and Duane Allman with his guitar. Long live the spirits and music of Gregg and Duane Allman!

Just by chance, met face-to-face with Gregg in Huntsville airport when he was leaving from recording at Fame, in Muscle Shoals. Grew up myself in Macon, as a kid, and lived just blocks from what later became the Big House. No one else was around, and Gregg graciously engaged me in light conversation. As someone who's gone to see the Allman Brothers probably more than 20 times, and Gregg with his own band a number of times, getting to meet him was unreal. My wife, who had just dropped me off at the airport, was wearing an Allman Brothers shirt (as she often does) and we listed to the ABB on the way there. Had no idea I would, by chance, run into him and his band. In retrospect, sad in a way to know now that he new his time was short. Glad I got to thank him for more than 30 years of great memories.

Actually, every time I listen to this album it brings tears to my eyes. I'm reading his book for the 3rd time right now. I really admire this man!! So often I've stopped to think about the drugs and the alcohol. It was his way of dealing with the grief and sorrow of losing Duane. I really miss his laugh, his smile and his down home sense of humor. I miss his talent!!

liver issues suck. mine are small by comparison but life altering, for sure. did y'all know Gregg was two time Valdictorian in High School? like him or not, Howard Stern got that out of him. pretty good interview. 48 min on u sloob. if you fancy yourself a musician like I do, but have doubts, when asked why he still writes songs everyday, he replies gently with a chuckle "why wouldn't I?" that hit me. on Texas flood CD SRV talks for a few about playing from the heart. not worrying too much about technicalities...that hit me. these guys were just guys who went for it. they were given it, but they had to develop it to have it to be it to get it. that it thing. stars align? hard work? luck? karma? timing? a little of all? idk but there's a silver eagle for sale around me and my house would sell quick......
