Note to self: it's probably not a good idea to call the 2000 Ravens defense bad, especially after you just lost to them and did nothing. Aside from the fact that it's arguably the greatest defense of all-time... it's probably not gonna end well for you
After the 2000 AFC Championship between the Oakland Raiders and the Baltimore Ravens, Raiders running back Tyrone Wheatley had some bizarre comments about the strength of the 2000 Ravens defense. And let's just say that he did not exactly sound like the most gracious of losers after the season-ending loss

The 2000 Ravens won a Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer at QB. Case closed.

Exactly I can only name like a handful of players on offense. Dilfer, Jamal Lewis, Shannon Sharpe, Quadry Ismail, Johnathan Ogden. I liked the story though of Dilfer going back to Tampa to win it all after they cut him. I believe the Bucs could have won it all in 1999 if Dilfer didn’t get benched for Shaun King. Trent would have won a ring if he stayed with the Bucs anyway so it’s a happy ending for every party but the Raiders.

I guess we shouldn't call Tyrone about the 2000 Ravens' D! I don't know what he was thinking when he said that mess. Even before that game, everyone who followed the NFL knew that defense was something special. That defense allowed fewer points in the 16-game era than even the 1985 Bears' D allowed and that's saying something. Wheatley and Michael Westbrook are a special kind of stupid for disrespecting defenses that were clearly elite.

An anecdtote from the world of theatre comes to mind. The boss of a Hungarian theatre was not happy about one particular play the theatre had for the coming season, insisting it was a bad play and would be a flop. The play went on being a colossal success, on show for well over a decade. After the 500th show the - now ex - director was asked about his prediction, he said "I still insist" :)

@J69user
@J69user 8 ай бұрын
No way is the 2000 Ravens better than the 1985 Bears. 1985 Bears injured like 8 QBs that season and is part of the reason why QB’s are so protected now. Phil Sims a HOF QB said it was the scariest defense he’s ever played against. Sims won the Super Bowl the next season. The 2000 Ravens had a better run due to them only having one home playoff game. 1985 Bears literally only put up 10 points the whole entirety of the playoffs and that was in the Super Bowl. 85 Bears also had like 5 blowouts that year not including playoffs games. One of the blowouts was against the 3’rd seeded Cowboys in Dallas. I love the 2000 Ravens but they aren’t even close to the Steel Curtain. 2000 Ravens would be 3’rd greatest defense ever. Everyone who took a snap against that Bears team will say that was that was the greatest defense of all time. The 85 Bears beat the next years Super Bowl Champion and blew them out. The 2000 Ravens run they played teams that made the Super Bowl but they never won it all. The Broncos were the only team they played against that won the Super Bowl in that period and they had no Elway or Terrell Davis on the 2000 squad. Those stats prove the 85 Bears was better.

Wow that would be like if a mid-tier corner or mid-tier safety said that the '99 through 2001 Rams had a bad offense. I think Tyrone got the 2000 Ravens and the 2000 Rams confused if the Rams had any kind of a defense and if Kurt Warner never broke his finger. We might have seen the best offense of all time play the best D of all time in Super Bowl XXXV! it would have been a hell of a matchup!

i Think the 2000 Rams are still the only team to score 500 points in a season. (540) and allowed 450 points in a season (471) and still make the playoffs. So i think Tyrone must of thinking about the Rams even though we didn't play him that year. Sometimes it's better to say nothing than to talk and make yourself look like a fool!

The real story is Gannon getting squashed by Tony Siragusa's fat ass early in the game. Separated his shoulder and broke his collarbone. Once that happened, the Ravens knew they could just stack the box and they'd be fine. With a healthy Gannon, that in my opinion changes this game completely. The defense has to play off the ball a bit because they have an actual passing game to defend too, which then opens up the run game. I think Wheatley's comments weren't as off base as you've made them seem.
