This clip is from the 1943 movie "Stormy Weather." The movie was a big showcase for black performers as, I believe, all actors/performers were black. Many stars, Bill Robinson, Nicholas Brothers, Fats Waller, Cab Calloway, etc., had worked for years in the entertainment field, but segregation limited their careers and opportunities. The movie studio segregated their dressing rooms. Lots of tremendous talent was overlooked solely because of the color of the performer's skin-another unfortunate chapter in our country's history. This Big Band music, jazz, is just one of the roots of Rock n' Roll, Hip Hop, Rap, etc. Blues, boogie-woogie, swing, and jump blues are some other roots. The type of singing is scat, where the singer vocally improvises by mimicking melodies and rhythms using the voice to make sounds, words, etc.

The style you're referring to is called "scat". Ella Fitzgerald was a master at it.

Cab Calloway was one of the greatest entertainers of his day, and appeared in the 1980 Blues Brothers movie in his 70's. Check that flick out, it's hysterical, both white and black actors/singers. it featured Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi of Saturday Night Live as the Blues Brothers but also Cab Calloway, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, James Brown, John Lee Hooker, Steve Cropper, Matt Murphy and other musicians and actors, comedians making cameo appearances you don't know the names of. Carrie Fisher was one of them [the original Prices Leia of Star Wars].

Tap dancing is very hard and you have to be in amazing physical shape. To be able to do the jumping splits is crazy. I did them in cheerleading as a kid. But… if you look closely, the hard part is…. The muscle control and power needed to get back up without hands or any partner. They went from split to stand with sheer power. I was waiting for your reaction when they did the stair routine. This film clip is actually from a movie called Stormy Weather. There is a version on KZbin that has been colorized. I like the black and white. It adds drama. Check it out and let me know what you prefer. Now as far as you not looking the part of a dancer, check out a guy called Gregory Hines. Built like you… danced tap to ballet and all in between. In the 80s he did 2 great movies. One with Mikhail Baryshnikov, Russian dancer who defected to US, called White Knights and the other movie is The Cotton Club, a club in NYC in Harlem NYC. Mr. Hines can dance. Choreographer too. Reminded me of you immediately. Lastly…. Those jumping splits? Probably why I can’t walk without intense pain today. Everything has a price. Any kind of physical manipulation can stress joint and muscles. As you age? Well let’s say the memories are the only fun part!

The amount of skill and control it takes to sing on key, dance/perform, conduct, and stay in time is unbelievable. As for the Nicholas bros, I don't think I even have to say anything. Just simply the best to ever do it. Mad props to the band for staying in time with the taps as well. With such a physically demanding dance routine human error is to be expected, but the band is able to keep in time and reighn in the taps. It's amazing

I used to tap dance and what I see as the most difficult part of their dance was the stairs. Going up those stairs required a lot of strength, balance and timing.

This is from the late 1930s and 40s. I'm 65, and this is what my parents listened to 75 years ago. Cab Calloway did the "Moonwalk" 70 years before Michael Jackson did it. Cab Calloway was silky smooth, and very cool.

I 64 and Cab Calloway the singer, dancers, musician, songwriter, actor, band director was my Grandma’s cousin. I never met him but love his work and followed it since my childhood in the 1960’s. He was doing what they call Scatting which was making sounds to to the rhythm and similar to today’s Rap. He is featured and was the inspiration to Janet Jackson’s video Alright. React to it if you haven’t. It’s a mini movie production. Love the Nicholas brothers too! Very talented! You had to be great back then at whatever you did to make it big 😊

Bill Robinson Bojangles was way before these guys.In 1900.to do this type of tap dancin. He made a movie with Shirley Temple in the 30s was the 1st black to perform in a movie with a white actor,singer,dancer. 1st to tap dance up and down staircases and such.❤I just saw An American in Paris at the Lexington opera house March14th. It's a movie from 1951 with Gene Kelly who stars in it and is also the choreographer.(singing in the rain) probably his most famous movie They adapted the movie into a Broadway play for the 1st time,so good.

Glad to see you guys are checking out this genre. Cab Calloway was a superstar of his generation. So very talented , started his own band when his was just 23 years old! insisting they dress sharp. Always in different colored Tux's. The Nicholas Brothers were also Superstars. Traveling all over the world! ,Imagine having their own Chauffeur driven limo! in the 20's and 30's.Quite a feat for anyone of color back in those days! There is a documentary on you tube of their extraordinary life! For another outstanding Tap Dancer check out Eleanor Powell. Fred Astair said she was one of the best tap dancers he ever seen, even he had a hard time keeping up with her! They made a few movies together. Thank You for your reaction.

The level of talent and also the hard work put into performances, by everyone involved, that routine had to be rehearsed many times to get it perfect; I love big band music, being in a four/five piece metal band is one thing, they're playing their own music, if someone f***s up, so what? 15 + musicians who actually have to read music charts, if a musician can't keep up or makes mistakes, they're out the door and they were all in unions, crazy tough gigs back then. And yeah, Cab Calloway is a legend!

Actually that sequence was done in only one take, and the bros. say they barely rehearsed it beforehand...they were just naturally gifted with a talent, and chemistry, all their own, people like that normally get it right the first time...

As a Gen x-er, I knew Cab Calloway from the movie - The Blues Brothers - which was packed with talent btw - Aretha Franklin, Cab Calloway... Anyways, he did Minnie the Moocher at the end of that movie. "Hey, folks, here's a story 'bout Minnie the Moocher. She was a low down hoochie-coocher...." I have seen this performance before, though, because you do NOT forget those dancers once you see them. AND YES!! He is SCATTING!!! LOL

Nicholas Brothers, probably the greatest dance team ever filmed. Thank God they DID film them. Other dancer sin the business like Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly marveled at their ability. Gene Kelly danced with them in one or two of his movie. All these people are gone forever now. You would have to study, watch, a d take names down on paper to understand what the hell and who the hell I am talking about. But it's worth it. You would get a total different perspective in black and white and color, on what was considered entertainment verses today. Today has good stuff, but other stuff is total absolute garbage compared to this what your watching in this session. This clip is a total treasure. Beats the living hell out of worthless sick violence and other shit people think is entertainment in the movies today.

Gregory Hines, I think, was fairly tall and HE tap danced the mud puddle dry. The man was awesome!! I think most people think of tap dance as old school but The Nicholas Brothers did it like no one else.

Secondly, it HAS to be choreographed so the camera's know what angles to shoot and when, not to mention timing it to the music. Filming is too expensive to just ad lib a musical scene like that. If you think they didn't rehearse that then you're ignorant.

To see it on film gives little indication of the physicality required to perform so powerfully and in time and synchronicity. Any athlete such as a gymnast, boxer or wrestler is no more in shape than these two athletes. I can guarantee they train and train and train in order to reach this perfection. Of course, once they have achieved their own high level, then it 'does' look graceful and easy. But we know better. I think athletes and certainly 'all' dancers really have a lot of respect for these two greats ! Peace to both of you. Keep up the great videos, and thanks for diving in and learning and sharing.
