After filming this movie Bruce Willis said that Haley Joel Osmant was the most professional actor that he's ever had the pleasure of working with. When Haley went to audition for this role, the casting director said that the first thing that impressed him about Haley was that he was the only one who showed up wearing a tie. The second thing was how well and flawlessly he read and already knew his lines at that stage in the process. They asked him how did he know his lines so well in such a short span of time. He responded that he read and studied them three times the night before his scheduled audition. Of course, they were amazed and replied, "You read and studied your lines three times last night?" Haley replied, "No, I read and studied the entire script three times last night." It was a done deal. Game over. Haley was also a straight-A student by the way.

What’s also very interesting is knowing Cole knew Malcolm was dead from the moment he first saw him. Remember in the church he says, “I’m gonna SEE you again, aren’t I.” That is further revealed when Cole tells Malcom he SEES dead people. If you think the kid is a great actor on your first watch it gets better on the revisit. It starts with him RUNNING to the church to hide from Malcolm - the current ghost that is hunting him. He ignores Malcolm as long as he can in abject shut down terror - it even takes him a minute to verbally respond to the ghost doctor. Cole actually learns to help ghosts by consciously deciding to help Dr Crow when he opens up to Cole about his marriage. This is when Cole tells him his secret. Then when they say goodbye at the end Cole knows the doctor is going to pass over and stop appearing “I’m not going to see you anymore” and so he helps his favorite ghost at this moment. “try talking to your wife when she’s asleep”. The fact that Cole has known since jump what was up but that this one ghost helped him see that they weren’t all angry monsters but just lost. It’s just so good.

For the record that’s Donnie Wahlberg, one of the founding members of 80s boy band New Kids on the Block and brother of Mark Wahlberg. Lots of roles in this are underrated. Such a joy to see someone go in unspoiled to this one, even now, nearly _25 years_ later (no YOU'RE old :) and have it hit just as hard. Just a masterful movie IMO - writing, directing, acting, score, everything combines to hit it out of the park. (appreciate the shout out to Olivia Williams too BTW - as Malcolm's wife - who I became a fan of after this and who I think delivers a fantastic performance but maybe doesn't always get the love because hers is a smaller role. She absolutely convinces as both a wife disengaging from her husband and then later, when we know, as a grieving widow who _can't_ disengage from her husband. And if that's not enough, she's actually English so she evokes all that while doing an American accent to boot :)

This was such a fantastic film! So glad I got to experience all the surprises beat by beat the same way everybody did when this came out. It truly is an unforgettable experience! Olivia Williams had perhaps one of the most important roles! Even though small without her the movie wouldn’t hit as hard as it does!

Haley Joel-Osment was a fantastic child actor! His first movie was Forest Gump with Tom Hanks, Haley played Forest Jr, he was 6 years old at the time. then in quick succession he did 3 movies, each a year apart, with The 6th Sense (1999), Pay It Forward (2000), and A.I. (2001). The next movie I saw him in was in 2015; a story where he's a college student, working on the issue of time travel. He's still acting to this day as an adult on TV. though you wouldn't recognize him right now with that ZZ Top style beard he's sporting!

It was nominated for 6 Oscars including Best Picture, but lost to the controversial dark comedy American Beauty, which won 5 Oscars, including Best Picture.

I remember watching the Oscars that year and I was certain that Haley Joel Osment would win Best Supporting Actor. And when he lost it to Michael Caine for Cider House Rules, nobody could believe it. Michael Caine is a great actor, but in that year nothing compared to this performance. The movie was nominated for 6 Oscars in total, and unbelievably won none.

I don't know if anyone else noticed this little 'give away.' There is a bright chrome doorknob in one of the scenes where you can see Cole's reflection in it, but you can't see Malcolm's reflection. There was also a mirror in the stairwell in one of the scenes for just a second, and you don't see Malcome's reflection. The second time I watched this movie, I looked for the clues. When Malcolm hits the window at the bookstore and breaks it after he saw his wife close to that other guy, pay attention to the window... The break has no impact point, the cracks are not spidering out like a window hit by something, it's uniform and unpatterned like when glass is broken by fast temperature changes. Another intentional detail.

It doesn’t happen often but sometimes someone will catch on early to the ending and I hate that for them because nothing is better than, like you said, the cold feeling you get right at the end when it is revealed. For me Haley Joel Osment’s performance is the most amazing thing about this movie and there are so many amazing things happening here. How do you get a young child to give an Oscar worthy performance that would be difficult for an adult to accomplish? I think his character is why it is so easy to fool us because you are so concentrated on the horror of what this young child is going through that your brain doesn’t have time to process anything else. You mentioned Forest Gump. Haley Joel also played Forest’s child in that movie. He also delivered a insane performance in A.I. Artificial Intelligence. Needs Kleenex. Great reaction from both of you.

A lot of attention went into making the ghost manifestations consistent. The color red signifies the presence of the supernatural. When ghosts are angry or upset, the temperature drops. Ghosts cannot interact with physical objects unless they are really angry or determined (as with the ghosts hurting Cole, or Malcolm smashing the glass when seeing his wife and the other guy, or the poisoned girl ripping open Cole's tent).

Don’t forget on the funeral he also doesn’t interacted with anyone and Cole is the one who hands the dad the box with the video.

I love so many things about this film, SO MANY THINGS. Haley Joel Osment proved beyond a doubt that no, NO, other kid could’ve taken this role. Toni Collette is the only one who can take the light off of him, and what does she do? She shines it harder on him, and bows out in tears. She is phenomenal. Olivia Williams (Malcolm’s Wife), plays her role to perfection- had she not, the film would’ve folded. While all of this amazing acting going on, Bruce Willis was dancing scene to scene, ever so briefly and peacefully. This film is one of the reasons I love movies.

spoilers: After watching this for like the 29th time with the two of you. when Cole goes to the little girl's house he tells malcolm 'don't go home' only you can't understand that comment until the end but... then he reaches for the door handle which is silver and reflective, the suspense is swelling about what's Behind the door, so we don't notice Malcolm isn't in the reflection, just Cole. Shamalan likes to use the camera shots to show us the whole truth in plain sight but were too busy being scared of the ghosts, so we only see what we want to see too. Also he talks to him mom in her sleep and she calms down and feels better. Thats how he got the idea to tell Malcolm, and they use the same words, "you sleep now."

*”They only see what they want to see”* The filmmaker isn’t just referring to the “ghosts’ in the movie but to the people watching the movie as well. The way it was written and shot, purposefully leads the viewer to not question what should be obvious after the fact; that the leading man didn’t survive past the first dozen minutes of the start. A quick jump to him sitting out on a nice day followed by his chatting with a patient. Of course we’re glad he “survived” and there’s no reason to question that. Even when the movie drops subtle clues to it along the way. Such as Malcolm never speaking to anyone but Cole. Even after Cole reveals his secret, we don’t question if Malcolm survived the gunshot because there have been just as many indications that he’s just on the “outs” with his wife and is dealing with the trauma of his “near death”.

@herrzimm Жыл бұрын
The 6th Sense twist ending is a cinematic "iconic moment". BUT, the reason why it works so well for 1st time viewers is due to the fact that the story is focused on Cole more than anything else. So we get pulled into HIS story and relationship with his mother, that when the twist DOES take place... EVERYTHING falls into place as to why it was always Cole and Malcolm interacting but nobody else, AND why Malcolm is able to reach (and work with) Cole so well. Because out of all the ghosts that Cole does see, Malcolm is the only one that does NOT scare him and actually treats him as a "person" and not as a "instrument" that the other ghosts needed Cole to be.
