Welcome to our first-time watching as we react to The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013).
We finally got our first look at a dragon in Middle-earth! Smaug voiced by the one and only Benedict Cumberbatch who did an excellent job with his performance.
Directed by Peter Jackson, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" follows Bilbo Baggins and the Company of Dwarves as they continue their perilous journey to reclaim Erebor. Along the way, they encounter treacherous enemies, including the fearsome dragon Smaug, who guards the Lonely Mountain with ferocity.
We got to see quite a few characters from "The Lord of the Rings" make an appearance here. From Legolas to Sauron there were definitely quite a few surprises we were not expecting
We hope that you enjoy our reactions, commentary and discussions as we delve into the film's themes and how it impacted the fantasy genre. How it's connection to the incredible "Lord of the Rings" trilogy made this such an enjoyable experience and how they continue to show the pure genius and innovation of J.R.R Tolkien who singlehandedly changed the landscape of what fantasy was as a genre and what could be achieved.

There was a great meme when the movie came out with a picture of Smaug on his treasure. It talked about the cost of the movie. It said the budget was so high because of Benedict. Paying the wizard to transform him into a dragon was cheap, but they blew most of the budget bribing him to accept being turned back into a human.

Yes. If not wrong, the "jewels" are a gift from Thranduil for his wife, before she died by Angmar or orcs. The dwarves had them and refused to give it to Thranduil. Some say it's Silmarillion, the jewel that start the feud between elves and dwarves, but I don't think it is.

Fun fact: Smaug loves gloating and enjoys the flattery Bilbo gives him in part because he's a relatively small and weak dragon. In the LOTR world, there's another dragon (drake?) called Glaurung, who is probably two to five times the size of Smaug. Not to mention Ancalagon the Black, whose size was such that he destroyed three giant active volcanoes called the towers of Thangorodrim simply by falling on them. (He was not necessarily larger than the towers, though) The towers of Thangorodrim are estimated to be approximately 35,000 feet tall, and 5 miles wide, according Karen Wynn Fonstad's "The Atlas of Middle-Earth", if her illustrations are drawn to scale.

There is a great part in the book when they are in Rivendell, showing Elrond the items they found in the troll cave. Elrond is telling them the names of the Elven made blades. Bilbo asks if all Elven swords have names what is the name of his. Bilbo is told Elven *swords* have names, but his blade is more of a belt-knife than a sword. That is why Bilbo names it himself.

Definitely needed more females, Bard's kids and the she-elf, to balance out the original set of 15 boys. And the fight on the river in the barrels was fun. The talk between Bilbo and Smaug was directly from the book. The power of Tolkien's words. it was the same between Bilbo and Gollum.

The elves of Mirkwood are different from the elves of Imladris and Lothlorien because they are Sindarin elves, 'the grey folk'. They never journeyed to the Blessed Realm of Aman in the west to live with the Valar like their Noldorin cousins (Galadriel herself lived there but Elrond did not, though his grandfather did) As a rule they are less powerful but also less noble and wise.

Bilbo certainly used the Ring more, and hold it second longest. He is extremely lucky though. The Enemy is still gathering strength, and its Will are not bend towards it's Ring. Frodo can't afford to be like Bilbo. When the Ring came to him, every moment The Ring/The Enemy seek to subvert his will, and whenever he wears it, The Enemy can See him. Talking of the Ring, it mentioned one of the 7 Rings given to the Dwarves. All 7 were lost. But the Dwarves was extremely lucky. The 7 didn't manage to subvert them to become Ringwraiths, like the 9 given to Men.

Context on tauriel mentioning legolas pledging himself to a sylvan elf. Sylvan elves are a branch of elves that basically never followed the gods summoning to the undying lands (or left the journey very early). Legolas and his father are sindarin meaning they journeyd all the way to the sea and there left the journey to search for their lost king, who had seen the kight of the trees and were ruled over by a lesser angel, same race as gandalf. These sindarin elves are considered grey elves and sindsrin are green elves. Sindarin are considered a higher more power and intelligent race.

Gandalf wanted that ring to stay with Bilbo. As much as he hated the idea he knew a hobbit was the only one who could reject the powers, temptations and manipulations of the ring. Bilbo is the reason why he knew Frodo would succeed.

Dr Strange voicing smaug was sooo awesome. If you guys watch the behind the scenes seeing the actor get into character similar to smeegle its pretty EPIC. he doesn't just sit in a booth, he full on motion capture suits up. he bends around, kneels up and down. he actually PLAYS the dragon. i'd love for you to add that behind the scenes on youtube. some behind the scenes LotR stuff would make good videos too :)

People shit on this trilogy, but it wasn't a bad one by any means. The Lord of the Rings was based on three actual books. The Hobbit was just one book but I'm glad they stretched it into three movies. Even ONE Tolkien book needs three movies to tell the story properly.

I can’t wait for the new trilogy, apparently it’s in the making now as we speak. Hopefully they use practical effects this time around, but I believe the reason they used CGI was because this movie was made for a 3D theatrical experience and it was also cheaper to produce the films. Remember, the lord of the rings franchise is the most expensive cinematic franchise of all time

I think you guys are the first reactors to react like THAT about Benedict's voice. I LOVED that voice so much I watched the movie twice in the cinema. If you love his voice as Smaug, wait till you hear Benedict as the Angel Islington in BBC Radio 4's Neverwhere. This is my favourite movie out of the 3. I even bought the Art of TDOS book + the book about how the geniuses at WETA created Smaug.

The Hobbit wasn’t a Trilogy. Tolkein did write another story with a Dragon that he tells how Talking to a dragon is very dangerous they can entrance people and cause amnesia. Their tactic is to learn about their victims through interrogation. Bilbo used riddles to keep the Dragon from learning about him. In Turins’ story the Dragon plays a very cruel biblical type trick.

19:00 Bilbo found a simple unmarked ring in a cave. Of course he doesn’t know it’s the Ring of Sauron. If you found a simple piece of jewelry in some random location, do you just assume it once belonged to Satan? In fact common folk like Bilbo would have known nothing about the rings at all. None of that ring history. That was very arcane knowledge known to the wisest high elves and Wizards and the rulers of Gondor, and not many others. (I think of it as a fallacy: viewers see the intro to FOTR, which Peter Jackson gives for the viewer's sake, and incorrectly assume the in-world characters know all that history too. They don't.) In the book FOTR, Gandalf spends two days discussing the existence of the ring and its history with Frodo before he leaves the Shire; prior to that Frodo and Bilbo knew none of that.

Everyone is talking about how great Benedict Cumberbatch was as Smaug, which he was, but I love how he did the voice for Sauron. He actually memorized his lines in the Black Speech in reverse so they recorded them with him speaking in reverse and then reversed the recording so the real Black Speech came out. He did it that to add an extra sense of eeriness to the sound.

Smaug is actually the smallest dragon in middle-earth, most of the dragons were present in the first age of middle-earth. That's why we don't see any dragons during the lord of the rings trilogy. If they ever do movies on the first age, it would be most interesting for me to see the scale of those other dragons and Balrogs.

Love your reactions guys, keep it up 🤙🏻💪🏼 And Smaug is my favorite character in the series, there's something about him that just bleeds power and a firce to truly fear. I recommend watching the original animated Hobbit from 1977 and listening to "Smaugs boast", gives me chills every time 🔥 And fun fact; Benedict Cumberbatch AKA Doctor Strange from the Marvel universe lent his voice to "The Greatest of all Calamities" and NAILED it 🔥💯 Another video I would recommend is Benedict in a visual caption suit saying the lines and literally acting the scene out while in character, such a flex as an actor. 💪🏼 This is by far my favorite installment of the trilogy 🔥

They changed the prophecy for this movie to match what actually happened, because in the book the prophecy was worded differently and had a positive outcome that wasn't fulfilled until the time of Dain. Here is the full, beautiful text of tolkien's original prophecy: "The king beneath the mountains The king of carven stone The lord of silver fountains Shall come into his own! His crown shall be upholden His harp shall be restrung His halls shall echo golden To songs of yore resung The woods shall wave on mountains And grass beneath the sun His wealth shall flow in fountains And rivers golden run The streams shall run in gladness The lakes shall shine and burn All sorrow fail and sadness At the mountains king's return!"

Greenwood elves and Lorien elves are same kin. They all silvan elves. They have been here for ages. But their leaders Thranduil and Galadriel are not silvan elves. Thranduil is a sindar elf from Beleriand. Kinda higher rank. Also Galadriel is a noldor elf just like Rivendell elves. But Galadriel way too powerful. She is also an high elf which means she saw the lights of the trees long long time ago. If you realise director wanted to show the light inside her pupils. Small detail but some might like it to hear. I could explain all elves where come from you saw in the movies. But it would be really long comment. Just dont forget that they are much deeper than you think.

The song at the end of this movie is by Ed Sheeran and it's called "I See Fire". I highly recommend listening to it, if you didn't pay attention to it at the end of the movie. Also, the bass singer from the acapella group VoicePlay, Geoff Castellucci, did a cover of the song that I also recommend. Geoff has a tendency to dress up as multiple characters in his videos for cover songs and for this one, he dressed up as four of the dwarves. I don't expect you guys to film a reaction to it, but I thought that you might enjoy watching it.

The forrest itself doesn't have any inherent power, it's the power of Sauron ("The Necromancer") having all those terrifying effects. Which kinda made me think that Sauron might have deliberately decided to create an evil, twisted counterpart to the Golden Wood of Lothlorien or even a perverted mockery of the "Girdle of Melian" and of his old enemy/kinswoman from the first age and her realm.
