This film always impresses me with how mature it is. It may be a children’s film, but the way it handles is subject matter does so in a way that is not condescending, and assumes a great level of emotional intelligence in its audience. It holds up now that I’m an adult too and I remember watching it with my mum too(who is no longer with me) and how she also enjoyed it. This scene alone, should be an example to other film makers. It is intense and perfectly paced. The performances really blow me away. It will always be a favourite of mine and a prime example of how you shouldn’t condescend to children to give them an enjoyable film experience.

Trunchbull is such an awesome villain. I love that she’s an Olympian, psychotic, smart enough to run her own school, and is also a confirmed murderer who stole an entire wealthy estate from a man’s daughter. The performance from Pam Ferris and Danny Devito’s direction makes her hilarious, but somehow the hilarity comes from the fact that she’s so over-the-top scary and evil it goes beyond reality. It’s hard to make a villain intimidating and funny at the same time without sacrificing one for the other at certain points. But even as she chases Matilda, the way she sniffs like a blood hound and brings the chandelier down from her sheer weight is uproarious.
