Amazing technology in those days. Boeing designed the B52 to cast the shadow of a B17. That's a devious plan, genius!

The B52 in this movie is participating in what in real life was called operation Chrome Dome.
@nordan006 ай бұрын
I thank Christ that I wasn’t aircrew during Chrome Dome (‘86-‘92), as the Buff was an extremely uncomfortable aircraft. It was loud, stinky, and cramped! Even happier that I was in after they disallowed smoking on the aircraft. The plane stunk enough as it was!
@Spectator19595 ай бұрын
@@nordan00The lack of comfort and the poor cabin environmental control contributed to the Thule Incident during a Hard Head (subset of Chome Dome) mission. Too hot engine bleed air routed into the cabin to keep from freezing to death ignited some polypropylene seat cushions brought onboard by one of the crew and started an uncontrollable fire.
@nordan005 ай бұрын
@@Spectator1959 I know the story as the prohibition against stowing anything remotely flammable by our feet was a WARNING in the tech order. It was a constant battle trying to keep the aircraft suitably comfortable at each of the three crew stations. We’d try to balance out the hot air blasting our feet by blasting our faces with the cold ambient air from the adjustable upper air vents at our stations.

That "better get a confirmation from base" was against protocol as "base" could be compromised or an enemy comms intercept. You get the code; you go, no questions asked by the pilots, all thosr questions were asked and answered by SAC before sending the code.
@TamLe-ig2ey6 ай бұрын
If that was the case then the Vasili Arkhipov would have just gotten ahead with the nuclear launch and then doom the entire world to death because a decision this important couldn't be confirmed? I'd rather avoid dying due to any technical error

They still fly nuclear arms out here at Minot AFB. The b52 is a majestic if a little ugly beast. It moves through the air just as smooth as a picture. Theyre amazing if you can manage to forget the world changing payload they take off with everyday

There is a cruel irony in that a character with such due diligence and caution is the one who ends up being the cause of nuclear armageddon.
@Heike--3 ай бұрын
*NO* The cause of the nuclear Armageddon was the insane swamp in DC who built such a weapon and put humanity at risk in the first place. Let's put the blame where it belongs. As this comment is being written, humanity is at risk for WW3 because they might throw a temper tantrum because they lost the war in Ukraine. Only time will tell if the war ends without going nuclear. Remember the motto: "nuclear war is preferable to Russian victory in Ukraine."

The Buff shown was a model of the real thing, but as for the interior they actually made a real good guesser and in the end there was an investigation into security on set, what they made the biggest thing with was the bombrun and safety switches, and once again they said it is what made sense to them in the studio were they to make one from what other planes had or would have if they had stayed in the air longer.
