This is one of the most iconic cover songs in history... they took a perfect song and created a completely new perfect song out of it. Amazing, still today!
For Willy Nelson, Elvis Presley as well as the Pet Shop Boys - that it can be enjoyed in so many ways is the indication of a classic.

Brings me back to summer 1987 at 17 years old racing around back roads with my dirt bike, no helmet, wind in my hair, Sony Walkman on max with this song. No real cares at the time with lots of freedom in the world. Times have changed and freedom has been greatly eroded with the direction humanity has taken. It's actually a montage of scenes from a feature-length film of the Pet Shop Boys, called *_It Couldn't Happen Here_* . A lot of fans didn't like it, but I really love it... It doesn't have a plot, it's more like a surrealist dream / nightmare landscape, populated with bizarre characters the Boys meet, and PSB songs peppered throughout. It was only available on VHS (super rare, I was lucky to find a copy) for the longest time, but it just finally got released on dual-format DVD/Blu-ray. This song for the last 7 ish years has made me tear up because it's one my grandma liked to play when I stayed at her house overnight as a child/teenager. It made me tear up after I stopped staying at her house once I got older, and I thought about the fact that it probably wouldn't be long until I lost her. We lost my uncle, her son, who lived with her, in 2022 in an accident. Tomorrow is my grandma's 80th birthday. Life is so weird sometimes... out of all my grandparents, she is the only one left, and the rest all passed away aged 67-71. We never thought for a second my grandma would be the one to make it to her 80s with all her health issues, hatred of going to the doctor... let alone the grief she's been through. This song still makes me tear up because I know it won't be long until all that's left of my grandma is memories, but I enjoy every moment I spend with her. ❤

It's a rare thing for a cover to be better than the original. But every once in a while, like this, it happens. More epic. More melancholy. Relentless. That echo-ing "YOU!". (And Neil Tennant's perfect enunciation is almost the anti-Elvis, who mumbled and slurred everything he said - so you actually get to hear the lyrics. Finally.)
