I'd say that the season is a definite success. I know the job isn't done but Yzerman delivered what he promised which is at least progress. They have improved each year under Yzerman since he became the GM of the Wings. Remember that Yzerman have had no lottery luck and STILL came that dangerously close to playoffs without relinquishing future assets that would have otherwise set the team even further back. On top of everything he had to get rid of Kenny's bad contracts. That is not a fly by job to do. That my friend speaks volumes about a damn good General Manager. If no fanbase, owner, reporter can't see that I don't know what to tell them.. Obviously, Stevie knows what' he is doing. BE PATIENT. Stop Panicking. Stop nitpicking! So I think Edvinson has locked down his spot barring a free fall, Bergeren and Johansson full time in a Wings jersey add a lot to the wings roster for next year, Kasper 3 line C and who knows maybe Mazur or Lombardi are undeniable in preseason and one of them stick. Futures bright, drive me nuts now the seasons over the fairweather fans wanna talk about yesterday or last week. Stevie Y hasn't lied yet and has fulfilled every thing he said he'd do, some are projecting how they feel onto a man and a team that didn't promise anything but improvement and they delivered

I think Steve made some mistakes in FA the last 2 seasons (Copp, Holl, Petry, Chiarot), BUT there is still no other GM I'd want to lead the Red Wings. The mess Kenny left behind really tied Steve''s hands. But we are close ... we have the prospects we just need to commit to playing them and living with youthful mistakes.
@captbloodbeard
@captbloodbeard 21 күн бұрын
Copp is the one that surprised me how bad it turned out. Last season I thought let's just give it another year for him to find his place. I loved Copp in Winnipeg, and he was continuing to prove himself on the Rangers. His underlying numbers showed a guy that would drive possession. I don't know if we're using him wrong, or if it was just an illusion, but it definitely seems like a mistake now. I'm fine with Chiarot, just as long as he's never paired with Petry. If Petry hangs them up, fine. Chiarot is a physical presence that can handle 2nd pairing minutes well enough. We still are overpaying for him, and he's not as fast as he used to be either. But on a team that lacks physical play, you kind of have to keep Chiarot if you can't find someone to replace that aspect of his game. Seider can't do it all. Holl just shouldn't play in the NHL. That one was a big L, but Steve signed him before he knew he'd be able to get Petry and was desperate for any RHD. Petry is better than Holl.

Chiarot has throughout his career been a physical hammer ....we lack that kind of player......he gets way less respect than he deserves.....he means a lot to team.........Holl Copp to jock wash department....DP give him another year great leader and presence.....production is slipping.....lot of talent in minors developing.......Bettmen to the dumpster for handing bedard to Chicago for them to get past sex scandal to change narrative there.....May be wrong just looks obvious

@@captbloodbeard I pretty much agree with everything you said, but I have this lingering feeling that if the Wings can make the playoffs, Copp could turn into a Johan Franzen type player and go on a run of excellent play when things get a bit tighter and grimier. There are little flashes here and there. I think his contract is a bit ugly now but the line that developed with Copp, Ras, and Fischer actually impressed me and provided some defensive stability in a team that is greatly lacking that in the middle lines.
@bradmaguire9611
@bradmaguire9611 21 күн бұрын
Copp will not likely ever put up Franzens numbers, Franzens was a genetic freak with good strong skating and elite elite hands, but this argument about Yzerman making mistakes in FA isn't taking into account that if h le signs a FA that's better it costs more, it affects your future, possibly prevents you from getting to the Cup if the player doesn't work out for the team, Holland did that post 08, and look how that turned out, screwed the team for the next 13 years. You also have to accept the fact that the wings are not a destination point for high priced FA anymore because they aren't a cup contender. They got Kane because other teams were still concerned about his hip, it's a catch 22 in order to get FA you have to prove you can contend. But everybody is an armchair gm/coach so they think they know better. I'll t use a guy who's won 3 cups as a player and 2 in the office over anybody on any thread any day of the week.

To all the inpatient fans: What do you think Yzerman could have realistically done differently that would have put this team in a spot to make the playoffs NOW, yet still somehow be set up for long-term success? He inherited a team with barely any NHL talent and a barren prospect pool, and was up against the cap with a number of horrible contracts that had to be bought-out, some of which we are still paying for. Then, to start the rebuild, we fell in the draft lottery multiple years in a row, and never selected higher than 4th overall. It cannot be understated how much that potentially set back the early stages of the rebuild. With how bad the team was during the first three years of Yzerman's tenure, we were in no way an attractive destination for high caliber UFAs to sign with, so it's not as though Yzerman could just go out and get a superstar, at least not without a major overpay that would have made it more challenging to round out the rest of the lineup. In regards to UFA signings, I see a lot of discourse surrounding Yzerman's UFA signings over the past two offseasons, which I will acknowledge has been a weak spot of Yzerman's front office. I see many argue that Yzerman made a splash in free agency a year too early; given how deep the 2023 draft class was, we should have tanked just one more year in hopes to draft at least in the top 5. Odds are we wouldn't have landed Bedard, but even landing a Fantilli, Carlson, or Smith caliber center would have been a franchise-chaning draft. I largely agree with this analysis, however, there are some things to consider: would this have realistically moved the needle in the immediate present? Would tanking last year have even guaranteed us a top 4 pick at all? Would we have been able to out-tank Anaheim, Columbus, Chicago or San Jose? Yzerman was asked this very question at the end of last season, and he admitted he had given this strategy some thought, but he believed he would have had to seriously gut the roster even more than he already had to achieve this outcome, and all that would have done is set the rebuild back even further. There's no way to know if his conclusion was correct, but at least he considered the option and made a sound calculation. And even if we would have drafted, let's say, Will Smith at 4OA, does that make us a playoff team this year, or even next year? Probably not. Yzerman chose to add some talent to the roster to try and make the team more competitive in the interim while our prospects develop and to develop a winning culture for the younger players that are on the Wings in the here and now, as well as to give the team something to build on year-over-year, which from I'm standing has been successful. We improved last year, and made even more improvement this year, and a simple tie-breaker is what kept us out of the playoffs. Has all his UFA signings been great? No, but at the end of the day, making this team more competitive has obviously made the Wings a more attractive destination for free agents to sign with. We got Patrick Kane for crying out loud. There could be a scenario where a player like Leon Draisaitl signs with us as a UFA, and that alone changes the whole game. This would be a direct result of Yzerman's free agency strategy paying dividends. Will these be the results? That remains to be seen, but I do think this is the rationale behind some of his decision making and I do think it's sound. Others have already made mention of our highly touted prospect pool, with many citing The Athletic #2 ranking as gospel truth. While I don't think The Athletic's opinion is the end all be all, I do concur that the praise is warranted. We don't appear to have that elite, game-breaking player just yet, but we undoubtedly have great players at just about every position, which will either one day slot directly into the lineup on a cheap, 3-year entry level contract, or will be packaged in a trade for a much better NHL player, in the same way we packaged a prospect like Donovan Sebrango to trade for Alex Debrincat. We have so many prospects at every position that we can likely do the same for another player in the future once the opportunity presents itself. These are things to keep in mind. I'm going to continue to practice the patience Yzerman preached the day he took over. I knew it would take a long time. Ken Holland was ambivalent towards entering a rebuild because even he knew they can take up to ten years in hockey, and he wasn't wrong. A lot of Wings fan are spoiled in that they've known nothing but success for decades, and have never had to live through the process of an actual rebuild, and how painstaking that process can be.
@SS-iv7wv
@SS-iv7wv 20 күн бұрын
Yzerman's draft picks will be fully filling this roster within the next 3-5 years and then you'll see playoffs return for many years to come. He's building the team the right way as opposed to Holland who traded away all the 1st round picks is why we're at this point for the past 8 years.

Stevie Y has some hard choices this off season after Raymond and Seider - Kane is the 800lb gorilla... he has at least 3 good forwards in the AHL in Berggren, Kasper and Mazur who are knocking at the door, personally if I were him I would try to move Berggren along with a bad or so-so contract (Holl if at all possible) or another contract that will help the cap to keep Kane and I would give him his term - 3 or 4 years (LTIR if he gets hurt), you get not only his scoring which I see remaining on the PP for at least a couple seasons but his presence excites the fans and team and he can then mentor Raymond and the aforementioned current AHLers, will it happen, probably not, their cap space is going to be super tight once they get Seider and Raymond taken care of and the way it looks right now without something really creative like that, looking at roster and cap situation the Wings could very well take a step backwards next season.

In a 2 year span the Florida Panthers went from 86 points and missing the playoffs to Presidents trophy winners. Then they dipped again and barely made it into the playoffs last year as an 8 seed, but ended up in the Cup final. Progress in the NHL is not linear. No one can predict five years out. All you can do is progress, and that progress is evident and inarguable in Yzerman's tenure as GM of the Wings.

When you take a step back from the disappointment there really was a lot of progress this year. Raymond could be a 40 50 goal scorer, Larkin keeps getting better and is a great leader and Seider keeps getting better. I don't feel Lalonde is the right coach and think he is def on the hot seat heading into next season. They should have made the playoffs and having it come down to a dumb rule for a tiebreaker is so frustrating. Really hope Kane and Perron come back. Wings need them both. Kane is huge for the team not only on the ice and off and Perron is a big locker room guy and also scores big goals. I also feel wings need a true #1 goalie and I'd bring back Reims as a backup. He's solid for a backup and the team likes him.

Its a learning period, but he's going to be Norris level when he's 27. This year was really hard for him, his usage was beyond brutal. If we have to come back with Lalonde again next season, he better ease it up on Seider a bit, give him some more favorable matchups occassionally or we're going to burn out that workhorse.

Sooo, if Yzerman doesn't think Johansson and Berggren will clear waivers doesn't that mean, by process of elimination, that he also thinks that they are NHL-ready and therefore that they have earned an NHL-spot??? In other words, unless traded, that they will play in the Red Wings next season?? "I will not hand them a spot, I will not play them if they are not ready, when they are ready they will play" he seems to like saying those words. @@bartsanders1553 I mean, we have Lyon who played out of his mind. I love the guy so much, I love how good he can be at controlling rebounds, he just swallows pucks. But he can get caught badly out of position sometimes. I love that we got the performance out of him that we did for $900,000, but he's not a number 1, not even a 1B. I'm glad that we still have him as a backup next season, he's shown with a limited workload he can be excellent. But right now, do any of us have faith that Husso is going to come back and look like a true #1? I can't speak for everyone, but I definitely don't want Reimer back. Nothing against him personally, but he's never been #1 material, and he's a few years older than Lyon is, and has horrible rebound control and has puck tracking issues. I do agree that team defense is a major problem, and that any goalie would have struggled with the way the team played on those bad nights. That just shows that we need better than average goaltending the entire season, because unless we have a different coach with different systems and better defensive forwards, we're going to have the same problems next year.

Cant go another season rolling out backups every game. 4-Cut the dead weight on defense. Rebuild it to be younger, faster, more athletic. Even if we have to go in-house with Johansson, Wallinder. We have to do it ourselves and draft great players and hope they develop into stars. So we better get comfortable. I wanna see some of his drafts next year. This will be 6th season and we have only seen 3 of his drafts. I understand u cannot just bring the young guys up and have a team full of youngsters (like the caniedians) we would suck. They need time to develop. Look at McKinnon. HE was drafted in 2013 I think. All these good teams drafted so good. They got all there pics right it feels (most of them). And us being just outside of the playoffs puts us in such a precarious spot cause u don't get really high draft picks and like u said, guys have to want to come play here. So we're not gonna get elite players by trade or free agency. It just doesn't happen. Sometimes u might get lucky. But it's up to us to get the right guys and mold them and shape them over the years and hopefully, they turn out ok. As bad as I say, we need to get into playoffs next year. I don't think it will happen now that I think about it. It's gonna be a while. I think 2 more years until we are contender. At least. Good talking with u!

No one doubts the Wings will be a force to contend with again soon despite not getting any lucky breaks in the lottery, and from previous leadership and ownership issues. But Steve is doing things to move the bar in the right direction. I trust him and those he chooses to work with to make the best decision based on what they know, what is needed, and who is available. I know there will be players who don't fit in as well as we would hope, but sports are not supposed have "perfectly predictable" outcomes or very few people would watch them. We want drama, entertainment, emotionally and mentally stimulation, and excitement and heartbreak. Those who vent because they are uncomfortable with the status quo just adds to the flavor of being a fan. For years, goaltenders playing on top youth teams are viewed as top goalies only because they play on top AAA teams. There are many smaller goalies who play in less talented teams who prove themselves over and over but get overlooked because you guys all want big goalies, yet these smaller goalies prove themselves game after game. Look beyond the Trey Augustine’s and you’ll find goaltending that is hands down better. I’d rather have a goaltender who have been forced to work much harder, getting outshot at minimum 2-1 game after game and yet they keep their teams in the game. For whatever reason, you guys are blinded by the big underachieving goalies.

He's not a top pairing guy, and him being paired with Petry does not work, but he's a great 2nd pairing D. The defensive issues we had this season was usually because of the forwards. I don't know what specific situations you're talking about with Chia not handling a forecheck properly, but I can think of more than a few times where a forward made a terrible pass to him after a small bit of pressure in the O zone, when that was the wrong move to make, and he got burned because of it and I will argue all day long that those mistakes were not on Chiarot. Now on the backcheck, him and Petry did not communicate well, so you could place half of that maybe on Chia, but usually it was because Petry was doing something that no one would expect an experienced NHL Dman to do.
