Its taken me 20 years of quite liking The Specials to realising how truly great they were. The image. The social comment and racial vibe of white and black youth attitude together as one still never topped or anything near it. Then the music. Their reign was short but grows in stature each year.....as I prove here just finally getting them after these years. Legends

I had never heard the Specials until first year university, although I had the Special AKA album in high school. Free Nelson Mandela? Anyone, anyone? Yes hearing the Specials for the first time is a wake up call, especially if you're enjoying the music with a cool nerdy boy from England who is about to become your best friend for life. We also bonded over Kate Bush, Tom Waits, the Pogues, Nikolai Gogol and the fact that we are both technically bastards (born out of wedlock). Our knee-slappingly funny attempts to function in a shared basement apartment and our stressful "vacation" in New York will have to wait for another time.

I finally really get it. Always been digging old school (1st and 2nd wave) ska, but just in the last couple weeks or so, something clicked with Madness and a few 2 Tone acts, particularly The Selecter and The Specials... Their stuff is just brilliant. I'm surprised I don't see more people talking about the drum sounds. Beats and everything and production so on point, perfectly complimenting the vocal parts. The whole thing is so tight, I can see why they're ostensibly the most influential band to come from that scene. Truly brilliant, eternal music.
