Permanent residency is different. A path to citizenship. Another 2 years and he would have to take a citizenship test I believe? Well that's how it is here in Australia.

He had to take it to GET permanent residence, he was previously there on his entertainment visa

Permanent residency and citizenship are not the same thing. Also, you don't have to "change" nationality. Most countries, including the UK and Australia, allow dual citizenship.

I wondered the same thing. I know a few EU nationals who got permanent residency just by asking for it, no test required. Would it have anything to do with him being a non-EU national?

And her associate Maurice Wilkins was awarded along with Watson and Crick, but no more than three can share the award, so if she was still alive when it was awarded it's more likely that Wilkins would have been snubbed and the award gone only to Crick and Watson.
