I understand what Offset mean about relatability with a therapist. I’d offer another perspective: sometimes the relatability gets in the way. SOMETIMES. Sometimes it’s good to have someone removed from your circumstances so they do not bring their biases to the conversation. People who can “relate” may have difficulty being objective or not centering themselves in your struggles. Perhaps relatability works better in a social or case work situation when things need to be more practical such as leaving an immediately dangerous or abusive situation, or getting children back, etc. Also, I think in our community, we may not always have a clear expectation of a therapy session. A session is not always for the therapist to tell you what to do, but instead get you to talk through your experience without affirmation or someone to say something is “right” or “wrong”, because that is usually not the point at the moment. The point is to explore your feelings, un-numb yourself, or redirect energy /feelings. People tell you that you right or wrong all the time. Thas nothing new. So it doesn’t give you the space to feel because you hung up on the “right course of action”. Now that we into the therapy wave, we need to somehow better communicate the different ways a session can look like. If you looking for a savior or problem solver, you already set up for a failed experience or disappointment. Because the truth is, therapy is often slow, awkward, and uneventful to start.
