I’m a general contractor that specializes in structural concrete. In Florida we would loose our license for something like that and could have legal issues depending on what was n the contract. Here you would need engineering, soil test, and permits for a wall like that. It would also require a special inspector which is a structural engineer with his SI qualification or inspections by the city.

@@UserName92149sure buddy. That’s why new construction in south Florida is rated for cat 5 hurricanes and California has earthquake ratings. My Dad and I put in 180 tons of limestone retaining wall around the family house. I laid another 30 tons after he passed. One wall is over 15 foot high and after 50 years it is still standing. Just limestone, no cinderblock behind the wall. The wall is about 12" thick on average and it had a fair amount of slope into the hill. Dad was a mechanical engineer and he had a clue. Naturally as a 16 year old, Dad had my free grunt labor to help build the wall. But that did help me keep in shape for football and wrestling. As a reward for helping, Dad bought me a pair of guitar speakers and we built a speaker cabinet together. Dad also taught me that I can do anything that I put my mind to.

For the one at 11:05 you should try cleaning the dirt away from the rock to allow the water to flow across the top of the rock. It doesn't look like they added any geotextile behind the rock, when you do that dirt is allowed to fill the holes in the rock and prevents water from draining to the bottom. Also the cinder block should be on a hard base all the way around and filled with concrete or rock that can compact and lock together. I don't use cinder block in the walls I build, there is a great product by versa-lok it is a solid block that is stone faced on one side, plastic or ceramic pins are placed in holes and slide into the block below and holds everything in place while allowing the wall to heave in winter. I've never had a wall fail yet, but if it happens, then I would be responsible to replace or repair it your contractor should be on the hook, even if they contracted it out to another company you can sue them if they refuse to fix the issue, they can sue the other company that incorrectly installed the wall if they want to recoup their cost.
@ytmadpoo2 ай бұрын
Yeah... that. Saw the thumbnail and immediate thought was that there's no geogrid behind it. Even worse was the cinderblock situation, but even then it would have needed geogrid when it's that high and holding back that much material.

EVERY retaining wall is supposed to have a rearward can’t to it, to prevent the soil from behind pushing the wall forward .. I know Texas doesn’t have to many freeze/thaw cycles down there, but the weight of the soil itself is enough to push that retaining wall forward.. I’m also kind of surprised that Matt ALSO didn’t realize that if that mortar cracks, the wall is running down like Humpty Dumpty
@hipkid3112 ай бұрын
I would suggest going with a modular block wall to replace it if you have to foot the bill. When built correctly with geogrid tie backs, that wall will be around for twice as long as a rock and mortar/cmu wall for half the price. And you don’t need a concrete footing or any rebar. It can also be done in half the time. Just a suggestion.

I've built several retaining walls and they're not hard or super expensive if done right. This one was less than half-assed lol
@notabot33752 ай бұрын
Do these not have to have plans submitted to the city at a business? With an inspection or two? Mine did. Had to have a plan for the whole site including parking lot drainage, grade, etc. Even the grass had to be a certain type and get rooted and inspected.

Yeah…. You don’t build retaining walls out of hollow cement block, they always separate, tip and fail. Wedge shape concrete poured walls with a foot on the back side is pretty much the only way to do it and not do it again.

A wall that tall should have required an engineer's stamp on the plans (At least in Colorado it would). You should have a very solid case for fraud. Hopefully you can salvage the stone as well as probably 2/3s of the gravel. You have my prayers, I hope you keep us all posted. Excited to see more of Side Snake cave as well.

Meanwhile my dad made a grill with a roof, made entirely out of fieldstones. (it looks kinda like pizza oven) It took around 2 tons of stone to complete. It already outlived it's constructor, and it will stand longer that anyone needs to.
