You can use the clutch between gears but you double clutch, clutch in, pull out of gear, clutch out while in neutral, clutch in and into next gear. Shifting without the clutch is known as “floating”. If you’re not good at floating you can hurt the gears by jamming it into the next gear.

Do not double clutch...just learn to be smooth. It's all about timing. Once you get the rhythm you can shift clutch less smooth as butter. Double clutching is a crutch to help you with the timing...it can still grind double clutching if your timing is off.

Hey Matt, pre-select your high range before you pull it out of 5th gear. As soon as it hits neutral it will switch automatically into high range so you can go into 6th alot smoother. Also unless you have a SUPER heavy load or you are starting from a stop on a steep hill really dont need to use 1st gear. Thats more like a granny gear.
@kadmow Жыл бұрын
- if he reads this (most drivers know this) - to figure which gear to start off in - when loaded (or unloaded), just test each gear and clutch out - without any (much) throttle - once the engine starts to bog down - use the one gear lower... (get a feel for what works in the situation) - under some (many) conditions starting gear may be higher than 2nd, this is the benefit of dual range gearboxes - your next truck may even have a split diff - a whole other set of shifts emerges.....
@nissan300ztt Жыл бұрын

I agree, flip it into/out of High Range while it is still in gear. The air that actuates the switch won't engage until you're in neutral, going to the next gear. After you spend enough years shifting like this, you find yourself doing it all the time, even in cars and pickups. It's all about the feel and knowing what rpms your gears line up at. If you aren't quite synced up when you try to shift, you can feather the gas a little to get the engine rpms to match the transmission rpms. Matt, Try not to force it into gear, especially 7th and 8th. They should slip in easy once you get the feeling of it. Those are what we call soft wall. Pop it out of 6th (basically 1st with the splitter up) and it should be in position for 7th. You can use 2 fingers to shift. To down shift, pop it out of gear, Rev the tach to about 1400 rpms, and shift it into the desired lower gear. As far as the turn radius goes on both Peterbuilts and Kenworths, they both have a much wider turn radius than say, a Freightliner or a Volvo. But, they nice to work with. Hope this helps

From the teaser in the last video I knew it was a Peterbilt. Ever since Keith bought back his 1st gen from u and you was drolling over his shed sled I knew you was wanting one. And I love seeing your choice of truck since I also own a 379 and mine is a 07.

Pretty much all semis you can float the gears after you get going. Just gotta find the sweet spot in the rpms and the shifter will just glide right into gear. Obviously you need to use the clutch when starting out, with those 10's, starting in 3rd when unloaded is ideal and 1st or 2nd when loaded depending on your weight and degree of travel.

I love the color of your new dump truck (Optimus) though, it’s like a robins egg blue/teal ish color. And I love the name you picked out, fits it perfectly!!

ANFO is good stuff, makes big rocks into much smaller rocks pretty quick. It also works really well for getting rid of stumps.

We always called it "floating" the gears. It's definitely a bit of a learning curve especially when you get into different trucks and they have completely different characteristics.

That big dump truck was a very smart purchase for your resort. It will also work well for hauling off trash that you can't use for he berm.
