Refractive surgery with intraocular lenses ICL | Oftalvist

From the Oftalvist Refractive Surgery Unit, we explain how ICL is an intraocular lens operation and in which cases this type of lens is recommended for the correction of myopia, hyperopia and / or astigmatism.
How is refractive surgery with intraocular lens?
Surgery with ICL intraocular lenses is very fast, lasting about 10-15 minutes per eye. Among the many benefits of an intraocular lens surgery, ICL is a potentially reversible lens, unlike laser treatment. That is, in case of complications, the lens can be removed without damaging any ocular tissue allowing the return of a preoperative situation with the possibility of performing new techniques to be performed. In addition, an ICL lens is flexible and invisible. Once implanted, neither the patient nor their surroundings see or feel it, it is completely invisible. The ICL also protects against UVA rays in a normal climatological environment.
Postoperative with ICL lens: it is a surgery that does not require stitches, which implies a fast recovery. The normal thing is that after 1-2 days the patient experiences a normal visual recovery with excellent results.
What is an ICL intraocular lens?
An ICL lens is a phakic lens, which means it is implanted without the need to remove the clear lens of the eye. The surgeon places it in the posterior chamber behind the pupil, between the iris and the lens.
In what cases does the ophthalmologist recommend the implantation of an ICL intraocular lens?
This technique is optimal for patients, mainly young, with high myopia or hyperopia, limited visions or very thin corneas that can not be treated by the usual Lasik technique. The ICL allow to correct up to 18 diopters of myopia and 10 of hyperopia. In the case of existing astigmatism, a toric ICL can be implanted for correction.
