Maybe they are Dark-fantasy versions? Although to be perfectly honest, the Dragon Age setting isn't too dark. Witcher is darker, the Black Company is way darker, and Warhammer is so dark it's actually funny. Slightly-more-dark-fantasy parodies?

@@iona2225 Dragon Age was pretty dark fantasy in Origins, but it got dialed back hard in the accompanying media. Tranquil are a nightmare. Broodmothers are the results of unending gang rape and forced cannibalism. Dwarves are nearly extinct, elves are constantly being genocided. Whole family is murdered in one Origin, your cousin gets raped in another. Ghouls being willing receptacles for darkspawn depravity. Blood magic being so powerful, and you have the ability to hand multiple children to demons. It gets real dark man.
