Ronnie Van Zant was a legendary storyteller who could write lyrics that EVERYONE can relate to in some way. A true genius.

The thing that amazes me about Ronnie was that when he composed lyrics to their songs, he never wrote any of them down on paper. He said "...if it wasn't worth remembering, it wasn't going in his songs"

I'm so happy you all finally got to this. It's one of my favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd songs, but honestly I like every song on every album. But this is such a classic and I never get tired of hearing it, I always hear new things in it. An Amber you are right, it was bottles and not cans, but the bigger difference is that, although the bottles would get reused after being washed out, it was different than recycling. There was a 5 or 10 cent deposit on glass bottles and if you returned them to the store, then they would give you that money back.

Skynyrd was special. When the plane crashed, the rest of the country was just discovering what us southerners already knew. These boys were good. Saw them live July 4th 1976. Yall need to watch their live Free Bird performance from 1977. Think it's in the Oakland baseball field.

This is such a good song, another take on it is how much an older person, coach, teacher can offer a younger person without asking for anything in return and how that could possibly leave a huge impression on that child for a long time. As a coach of younger kids its a nice reminder when they get older, have some success and remember/appreciate some of the lessons you tried to impart on them when they were first starting out.

He spent a lifetime playing the black man's blue's and on the day he lost his life that's all he had to lose. I once heard that in their prime, they played a small town venue (I think some place in Oregon), but they billed themselves as The Curtis Loew Band....it was still a sold out crowd, because the locals knew who it was.

Damn, so happy you covered this song. I was that little 12 years old white boy in Georgia when this song came out. A few years past MLK and RFK were being taken from us far to early, we were starting to figure it out. Yes there were still tensions, but we had football, BBQ, the blues, and Jesus in common. Not sure what happened since then, but it makes me sad. the Ballad of Curtis Lowe is the embodiment of the the old 1930's Delta blues guitarists from Robert Jordan, Lead Belly, and Albert King (the King of Blues Guitar). You should check out Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan in session 1983. The master of blues guitar acknowledges that the young pup has learned his lessons well, and the pup has total respect for the OG. I wish they still made music like this. Ballard of Curtis Loew is my favorite Skynyrd song.

As a kid in the early seventies my brother, our neighbor and myself would pick up bottles and take them to the country store about half mile from home. We would cash them in for 5 cents each and buy a soda and candy bar. We would be home from home for hours on our bikes in the summer while our parents were at work and no one would bother you. Great memories.

I love Neil Young, but this song is evidence that Lynyrd Skynyrd's criticism of Neil's "Southern Man" in their song "Sweet Home Alabama" was not based on racism, but simply a love of the Southern lifestyle and that they felt a need to push back on Neil's criticism. It's a thorny issue to this day, as we all know, but Lynyrd Skynyrd were proud of the South despite the racial tensions at the time, not because they chose to ignore or even tacitly endorse them.
