At the risk of sounding blasphemous, I think movie Sonic’s personality, motivations and character arc are actually superior to game Sonic’s. I’m not sure how to explain it, but I’ve never been able to get invested in game Sonic’s character, no matter how much SEGA and the fans insisted that he is a heroic type who (mostly) doesn’t just do what he does for fun. It wasn’t until I saw movie Sonic’s portrayal that I finally saw what everyone else CLAIMS he’s like in the games, at least way deep down. Unlike in the games, in the movies, we see Sonic have moments of vulnerability and great uncertainty that are actually expanded on and put front and center. We see him having a deep desire to form closer connections with other people. We see him experiencing the pain of loneliness and isolation. We have a moment when he humbles himself and apologizes after he was too quick to judge. And all of that stuff was in the first movie alone. I will forever be blown away by how a single movie accomplished for me what decade’s worth of games never could. I would tell SEGA to take notes, but given their track record for the past several years, I’m not optimistic about the games embracing much from the movies.

My theory is that originally eggman will team up with sonic when he hears a threat to destroy the world, until he finds out it’s Gerald, his grandfather, and will betray Sonic to work with Gerald, unaware that Gerald and shadow really want to destroy the world, whilst eggman just wants to rule it. This sort of gets confirmed when eggman goes, “we can rule humanity” and then later in the trailer, shadow goes, “when we’re done, there won’t be anything left to rule” eggman will probably realize that what they’re doing isn’t what he wanted, even though Gerald is his family, so he’ll probably go back to sonic, and/or convince shadow to not work with Gerald. But that’s my yap session

I’m glad they added the moon bit but trying so hard not to be nitpicky about how it was done, because recently I’ve realized how impactful the moon’s destruction really was to the sonic world building.
