Yup for me getting older is just watching my heroes & my friends die. I've lost 3 to cancer in 2 years & another who finished his chemo but now is back in hospital cos "things aren't going to plan" which is exactly what happened with 2 of them so I'm freaked out. My friend took her life & her 15 year old son found her. I NEVER want to see my mates young people be a pallbearer ever again. My aunt died from covid as did one of my school mate's sister. So I knew her, not well but I remember her & it's been intense supporting her through that. I feel worn out. I escape in music, cry, smile whatever but sometimes there's no making it better. I can't even get out of bed today for the depression. I can see how people who are around or in their early 50s have had enough & dip out.

And when you can see it all around you, it's depressing. And it makes you sometimes wish something would wash it all away, burn it away... but that's not how this world works. That's what the song, and the video, are about.

That’s not the message. There is no message. This isn’t fuckin’ Sunday school. Don’t reduce this music into a nice, neat little cliché. That is the worst thing you can do to this song. You may as well not listen to it at all. Just put the message in your pocket and go misunderstand something else.

Took me a minute, but this seems to be about when God does the final purge of the earth by fire. If any read the bible from beginning to end, it is amazing. This fellow no doubt has a bible knowledge. God purge the all humans but 8, by flooding it with a downpour if rain for 40 days and nights. The rainbow is His promise not to flood the earth again. But after providing a way if escape from sin and its affects, He promised He will purge all traces of human accomplishments by burning the whole earth with fire, purifying it. Black hole sun wash away the rain.

Cornell reflected on the song's lyrical content to Uncut: "What's interesting to me is the combination of a black hole and a sun," he said. "A black hole is a billion times larger than a sun, it's a void, a giant circle of nothing, and then you have the sun, the giver of all life. It was this combination of bright and dark, this sense of hope and underlying moodiness." "I even liked the way the words looked written down," Cornell added. "I liken it to Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, where there's a happy veneer over something dark. It's not something I can do on purpose but occasionally it will happen by accident

In my opinion, this song is better appreciated by listening to it without the video. Some videos, especially from the 90s, distract the listener from the greatness of the music. Closer by Nine Inch Nails has a similar issue. All the reacters are freaking out because of the disturbing visuals and stop appreciating the vibe/mood and beat of the song.

This came out my senior year of HS and holds _so much_ nostalgia for me. I’ve heard it many hundreds of times and for some odd reason have never looked up the lyrics. So it’s hilarious reading through these to see where I’ve gotten a bit wrong all those times. 😂😂 Isn’t that always the case though? I haven’t made any truly funny mistakes with this one (like “there’s a bathroom on the right”), but it was interesting to see what bits I never quite understood before.

It's words that meant nothing that ended up contrasted with a world that meant nothing and became a devout prayer for it all to be stripped away. Originally a "word painting" it was just word patterns that sounded good together, but the video for a song gives the chance to clarify or impart extra meaning even where little to none may have existed in the first place. It becomes this wonderful/horrible contrast where the singer feels the darkness inside at being forced to appear normal surrounded by such emptiness and fakery, where all around him people are trying to look better than normal. It's like "I feel this crappy and hollow just trying to pass, how messed up are the people trying to appear holier than everyone else?" Grunge was a direct and spiritual successor of punk, a rejection of pop culture -- especially the garage band scene of the Pacific Northwest, of which the Seattle-originated Soundgarden was a foundational member. TL;DR - Rip and tear, until it is done.

Watch the video when they're all staring at the butterflies and the guy has his face up to the TV. They're all wearing forced smiles. My opinion is he's talking about the world being changed with us being focused on things that shouldn't really matter. There's the scene where they're looking at the cockroach through the magnifying glass. That's a metaphor for the elites and we're the cockroaches. They don't let us see the big problem of them abusing us because we're focused on the butterflies and the tv. Chris sees the problem, and he sees no hope, other than for the black hole coming to our rescue.

I just remembered the band standing in front of a sky performing. I think the video was mostly just to provide a freaky visual. The song though, the song is timeless. RIP Chris Cornell. Thanks for all the music.

Gotta admit, I'm a little surprised it took you this long to get around to this one. Soundgarden was a big part of the 90s music scene and they put out many hit jams. Glad you got here.

My man Mr. Video reacting to Soundgarden - my favorite band of all time - it doesnt get any better than this! Their best albums are "Louder than Love" (1989) and "Badmotorfinger" (1991).

If you like Chris' voice, I can recommend listening to Audioslave.. It's him and the members of Rage against the machine (but without Zack).. a good one is "like a stone". .. on the other hand if you want to understand what's going on musically in black hole sun (which is exceptional), check out the video of 12tone on it. can highly recommend it..

My favorite Soundgarden tunes are "Spoonman" and "Burden in My Hand." This song gets overplayed on the radio, imo. A lot of rock stations, this is the only Soundgarden song they seem to play.

not that deep really, just some social commentary on the mundane, plastic happiness of white-bread suburbia-----and a desire for it to get washed away----a great ideal, as someone raised in a bland sudivision, but the problem is, those who want to "burn it down" never have a good answer as to what they want to replace it with that would so perfect and incorruptible.

I’ve lost many of my idols in recent (some not so recent) years, but Chris is the one that I just can’t get past. I’ve loved Chris & Soundgarden for more than half of my life. I just can’t move on. It devastates me every time I hear a song from any of his various projects, but particularly Soundgarden.

Bruh, @ various times you become totally immersed in the video and audio simultaneously for about 5 seconds, which obviously gave you a feeling that started to freak you out a bit. Which is what the song was designed to do 💯 This feeling you got, makes it timeless and undeniable with maximum effect. That was pure. The soul of this band unknowingly spewed out a masterpiece. One of the purest reactions to anything I've seen in a while bro ✌😏 peace out
