I sang these as a child with my school in London. It was the start of a very long career as a singer both pro and amateur. One of the things born Londoners do is travel and be part of other communities abroad and I lived and studied in Cologne and they have a very similar tradition to music hall there that is still very much alive in their carnival classics. They have a famous carnival on pancake day. Shame that not so many people are interested here some of their classics get over 1m hits!

I love this song. I first heard it sung my Paul McGann in the 1986 BBC TV series The Monocled Mutineer. I can almost hear the music hall audience singing along as they swayed to and fro in time to the music.
