What a beautiful song. That wasn't the first time I'd heard it, but Ernestina Jošt gave the best performance of it I've yet heard.

Such a beautiful performance, I have played it over 10 times and can shed no more tears. Shout out to the oboe and harp soloists who likely took a bow after the clip was cut. Their melody places this song squarely in that period of american history.

This just HAS to be the most beautiful performance of this old traditional American ballad that I have ever heard... and it is Sooo beautiful to watch as well, everyone from the lovely Ernestina to the young ladies in the chorus to the wonderful musicians in the orchestra. I learned this lovely old song when I was a kid in the 1950s, when a chorus of which I was a member performed it at recitals at our church on several occasions. My mother, the choir director, (also the pianist, and organist) insisted that we all know the story of the lyrics, of the fur trader traveling on the Missouri River and the Native American chief's daughter with whom he was in love , and her father, Shenandoah. And my mother insisted that we memorize the lyrics, as with every piece we performed. No pages rattling or dropping to the floor... and eye contact with our audience... our parents and the congregation. And I still remember every word of the lyrics to this day. It is also where I first learned Mr. Dvořák's "Když mne stará matka" ("Songs My Mother Taught Me", in the English language version which we sang), which Ernestina and members of this orchestra and chorus have also performed and recorded beautifully in a rare music video titled "Last Journey Home". So this is a very emotional and wonderful experience for me every time I play this beautiful performance by Ernestina and this superb orchestra and chorus. 💖💖😊

Wonderful performance! Monsieur Zevnik’s goal, in his words, was to create an "amazing musical journey into heart of American soul, which I experienced during my cycling trip from Boston to Seattle.” He is succeeding. The origins of Oh Shenandoah Across the Wide Missouri are obscure but stem from the early part of the nineteenth century. The music meant different things to different groups. But to my ancestors who escaped the wars and famine of Europe it represented the journey to a new life free from all those horrors. And it is just a beautiful song sung by a beautiful lady. Bravo Mr. Zevnik, can’t wait to see what comes next!

This was mesmerizing. Zevnikov's touch where he clings to several bar, tenaciously, before he plunges into the revelation. Here, like a sneaky prelude (but awesome) with a persistent dominate note on the cello/counter-base then gently revealing the mystery of his interpretation. Bravo!

I agree with you about the violas and cellos (and contrabass ?) carrying that one long note throughout the first verse and well into the whole piece. Actually, those string musicians pretty much set the mood for this whole ballad, portraying (in my mind) the beautiful, so-slowly-moving upper Missouri River in the American Dakota territory, where the story of this ballad takes place. A beautiful orchestral arrangement by Primož, for sure. He seems to have a habit of doing that. 😊 And of course, it helps to have this superb orchestra and chorus, and the amazing Ernestina to make it happen. 💖😊
