It may interest you to know that the sailing vessel Eliza, bound from Salem, Massachusetts 'round the Horn to the gold fields of California in 1849, encountered another Salem vessel at sea. An Eliza passenger recorded that he and his fellow "Fortyniners" climbed atop the cabin and serenaded their fellow townsmen with "The Washboard Song" ("Oh, Susanna"... the gold-seeker's anthem), played on the BUTTON ACCORDION.
