Something I noticed while rewatching Whole Cake with my buddy Kelly is that while Linlin had innocent and noble intentions as a child, even back then she lacked empathy. She tried to “fix” her long arm friend, almost tearing his arms off in spite of his begging. It was Mother Carmel who talked her down, not the friend begging her to stop. There was ALWAYS an underlying darkness in Linlin even before she ate her Devil Fruit (and Mother Carmel)

I'd also point out how Sabo took on some of Ace's Fire First persona as soon as he ate the fruit at the colloseum. It's subtle, and we only see a handful of people before and after they eat a fruit, but it's pretty clear given what's said about DFs and what we see of them. I kind of like the idea that each user leaves a part of them behind in the fruit when they die, and each fruit actually has a collection of all of the previous users' wills. Since we also know that awakening requires that "your mind and body must catch up to the fruit", we know fruits somehow have an affinity for specific kinds of people. I think what's happening is that fruits are "pure" if its users are all unified in their dreams and wills, and "diluted" if lots of different kinds of users ate it in the past. I can imagine the wills competing within the power, making it difficult to align with it and awaken its powers. Finally, I think the only previous user of the Gomu Gomu no mi, if there ever was one, was JoyBoy. Either JoyBoy *became* the Nika Fruit, or he died, and passed it on to nobody else for 800 years to make sure his will was undiluted until his successor was born.

I have a similar theory about Luffy's DF. I think it was probably just the gomu gomu no mi originally. Then, when Joyboy was about to die, he transferred his dreams of liberation from the Nika tales that created his use of his DF onto it. Transforming it from a regular paramecia to a special zoan type. This can account for the specific paramecia traits the Nika fruit has, namely the rubber body and the world changing properties the awakening demonstrates. This could also be seen by the lack of alt forms of this fruit. Luffy only develops these after meeting several zoan users and crafting a form that could allow him to fight Lucci successfully. All the gears before 5 needed activation actions performed to be transformed into, yet the Nika form (Gear 5) is the only form that comes naturally. I think it is the only true alt form Luffy has.

This is really similar to a theory I've had for a long time. The final act of defiance from the Ancient Kingdom was to imbue their essence into the devil fruits. So rather than be eradicated for their unnatural powers, their will would effectively become immortal by living on in the descendants the very people who betrayed them, and making the return of Joy Boy inevitable. A constant reminder to the Sea Devil of what went down during the void century, and their failure to fully eradicate the ancient kingdom, no matter how hard they try to suppress it.

This theory also helps explain why devil fruits and their users are debilitated by the sea. If Imu is the sea devil they could probably infuse the entire ocean with their haki. It doesn’t have any effect on non devil fruit users because imu is focused on the devils in the fruits (like how shanks targeted greenbull specifically). The devils are linked to the users ofc so it has the same effect on them

This is a good theory. I just have a few things to say: 1. The theory about the trees is rather interesting, but doesn’t it seem somewhat incomplete? If all the fruits came from the theoretical tree at Mariejoa, why didn’t the Gorosei just keep Nika’s fruit. That would have been much easier instead of chasing it for 800 years. Thats my only reason for thinking the fruits didn’t come from a tree. 2. The mistake that Nefertari D. Lili made resulted in the poneglyphs being distributed across the world. Not to say that it couldn’t have resulted in the devil fruits being distributed as well. But it seems like Imu is mad at Lili specifically because of the poneglyphs getting distributed. That very mistake is the probable reason for her disappearance but not before she was able to send a letter to her little brother. 3. I like the idea that the devil fruits might have been a side effect of the ancient kingdom losing the war. Its a unique spin that I haven’t heard before. If this is the case, it could work in line with Vegapunk’s theory.

Going off of this theory, what if Rocks D Xebec had his soul absorbed into the yami yami no mi and now that Blackbeard ate it he has both of their souls inhabiting his body. This also explains how he could eat two fruits, because Rocks’ soul it the one that “ate” the devil fruit leaving Teech’s soul without a fruit. His two personalities also reflect this perfectly, the aggressive and evil side is when Rocks is controlling and the cowering side is the real Teech. I want to expand the theory: What if the Will of D. Actually means that those people are also Devils themselves. Have a closer look on their names. For example what if Monkey D. Luffy means Monkey Devil Luffy and he is an Apelike Devil in reality. What if he can transform like the Gorosei? Also if you look at some other will of D people it makes sense. Jaguar Devil Saul. The german translation for Aces name is actually not Portgas but Puma D. Ace = Puma Devil. And the list goes on. Yes some names have to be interpreted correctly but I dont know enough japanese mythology for that. But think about it. Luffy as a Monkey Devil has a close relationship to Dragonball.

I think that Joyboy is the leader/founder of the ancient kingdom, that discovered how to make dreams become real, and did so for people for 100 years until someone destroyed the kingdom, and turned the people or their souls whose dreams became real (which are likely the devil fruits powers themselves) into fruits with their "Dream" power. Those fruit would probably have had the same powers the people had when turned into their respective fruit, and because the person (or thing) that made them hasn't died, (likely imu or the gorosei) the fruits powers manifest into another fruit when the previous user/host dies. We have already seen someones power used to turn a countries worth of people into toys, and make people forget about them. We have also seen (implied) someones power get transferred to someone else by eating them, with LinLin and Mama Caramel. What if instead of toys, Sugar had the ability to turn people into fruit? Anyone who would eat the fruit would get their power, right? It would also explain why most Smile fruits dont work, because its missing the "living" component. Smiles might only work on people whose dreams are destined to be strong or meaningful, or whose will or lineage factor is closest to the original source, like Momonosuke. Wano probably had a dragon protector in the past, who was probably a friend of Joyboys. I feel like that would fill most of the plot holes left.

I feel like people are too focused on the Fruit part of the Devil Fruit. Yes, the connections to the forbidden fruit are there, but we know that devil fruits do not need a tree to regrow. After one DF user dies a seemingly random fruit becomes the fruit of the deceased person. There is no tree involved there.

Another good example of Devil Fruits having a strong personal will imprinting themselves on a person and in my opinion the most well documented and extreme one is Luffy. Luffy's childhood is just tragic, he's an often frustrated child chasing temporary joys that he finds by being with others and he badly seeks validation from those he looks up to, then he eats a DF, becomes a perma-smiling laughing boy, and develops a deep sense of independence and inner-confidence, and surprise, he ate the fruit representing a mythical god of freedom and happiness.

I really like this theory, but I was just thinking and then I came to form a very interesting question in my head: if someone were to have enough haki, could they somehow kill a devil? I know it sounds kind of stupid, but if you think about it, haki allows someone with a devil in them to get through their barrier and effectively hurt both. So theoretically, if someone was to be weak enough to not be able to kill, but had an immense amount of haki, could they kill the devil within the person, effectively erasing that power from existence?

my theory is that the citizens of the ancient kingdom were tempted by the genie(sea devil), granting them 3 wishes(desires). it is said that they were pretty much an advanced society, so anything magical or mythical would be extraordinary to them. so, these people now having powers due to the 3 wishes, are then consumed to the tree, dividing 1 person into 3 separate fruits. I think that blackbeard solved or knew about this, hence he ate two desires/wishes of 1 original devil connected to destruction, which is wishing to destroy the world(quake/paramecia), and wishing to bring the world in darkness(yami/logia). the only missing puzzle left in completing the devil is its body (zoan). luffy already has his body, the zoan model nika, what if he needs two more fruits to complete his full devil form, maybe the flame fruit and a paramecia connected to sun or giving life/liberation?

It could be when the eater takes control back from the devil, or it could be when the eater and the devil align in mentality and synch up unleashing the fruits true power. My theory is that the World government changed the name of the devil fruits like they did with the Name of Luffy's fruit. Like Doflamingo said the victors decide the truth. The real name of the fruits is Dream Fruits and WG changed the name so they have evil conotation and people don't eat them. Also The WIll of D is The will of Dreams, in the grand scheme of the story it makes perfect sense as the whole show is about having dreams and chasing them, also Vegapunk's theory is that the powers come from alternate realities where the user has the power and they exist because people dream about that power. In addition The Gorosei most probably don't have devil fruit powers, its more likely that they are created by Imu as they refer to him as The Creator and seeing as they can communicate through telepathy and can summon each other they move more like a hive mind and are connected.

Here's my theory which I've had for quite some time now. The D of the D clan stands for "Devil". The D clan hails from the ancient kingdom and they created the Devil fruits. The reason those fruits are named like that, is because the D clan gave them their own name. Simple as. The D clan is a unique race, just like fishmen, tontatas, minks, giants, long arm tribe, long leg tribe, three eye tribe, these guys with the wings and so on and so forth. Every other race has distinct characteristics, whereas the D clan looks like everyone else. Most of them look human but some might be giants or belong in any other race. So what makes them different? Because otherwise, they're not really a unique race, right? They're just humans with a D in their name, or giants with a D in their name, or tontatas with a D in their name and so on. Well, the difference is inside of them. Their DNA. It's not visible. But how is that difference shown? Simple. The D clan, who designed the Devil fruits as a weapon to fight the celestial dragons (Celestial, therefore divine, and who is the greatest enemy of god? That's right, the Devil, in this case the Devil clan is the greatest enemy of the CELESTIAL dragons), can do something very special that no one else can. They can eat more than one Devil fruit. They designed those fruits specifically to be as compatible with their DNA (their bodies) as possible. Now remember, Devil fruits have to do with your body, not your soul. When Trafalgar was moving people around each others' bodies, or when Moria moved Luffy's shadow inside that beast, the Devil fruit powers remained in the original bodies. They did not follow the personalities/souls of the people. Tashigi had Smoker's smoke-smoke powers while in his body, or Chopper didn't lose his human-human ability when Franky came inside him (you know what I mean). Blackbeard is an avid archaeologist. He loves reading about history and Oda said he'd be an archaeologist if he wasn't a pirate. So at some point, Blackbeard discovered this truth in some probably forbidden ancient texts about the ancient kingdom. That's how he's able to eat three Devil fruits. It's not that he specifically is "different". It's that ALL D clan members can do that, but he's the only one who knows it and of course he's not going to share that secret.

Crazy theory that I came up with after hearing you talk about how haki nulifies Devil fruit powers. What if the sea was fed a zoan type Devil fruit and is now self aware, and has haki, and THAT'S why Devil fruit users lose their abilities while underwater? Also, what if the sea manifests in the form of Imu? And if Imu dies, then her Devil fruit reincarnates, the sea turns back into a non-sentient object and all Devil fruit users can now swim?

Basically, at the end of the Arc, luffy and gang are going to run for their lives. Then luffy is going to regret that he cannot defeat the five elders. Then rest of the story would be about how luffy is going to beat them in battle once again.

I've come up with this theory as well. I figured the fruits were souls from the strongest people back then, and that the mythical zoans were the souls of the "gods" of the 800 year void, or even before then. However, I couldnt think of who'd put the souls there, and while imu is a prime suspect i doubt he was responsible for ALL of the devil fruits. Because why the hell would he let the strongest, deadliest, and most threatening devil fruits escape out into the world? i.e. luffy's fruit

after hearing this it really makes me think that the ancient kingdom may have been a kingdom of Ancient Giants and Lunarian that live peacefully and procreated. Using that logic it also means if Oars was Joyboy who would love all gives more meaning to "Continent Puller" bringing these two enemies together maybe he physically didn't move them but brought them together. It can also explain where the Buccaneers come since we kinda know they might be a mixed race of giants. If we look at it biblically both sides would look at it as blasphemy and give reason as to why the 20 kingdoms would betray the ancient kingdom and as to why they are deemed "devils"

1. So we want all devils/citizens to be free again? Let all of them and Joyboy rule their ancient kingdom again? 2. Or do we want to defeat Imu and all of his brothers and sisters once and for all, even if they already betrayed and fought theirselves? They could team up finally. Every person with a devil fruit needs to get rid of it at one point. (Shanks crew knows that) Interesting that Vegapunk said the ocean is the mother of life. A specific plan for evolution was made and not how it goes in One Piece right now. The ultimate plan of the devil to expand the rules of gods own creation? I feel like devil fruits are more like a behelith of berserk. A desire, a dream, an unnatural evolution of life that you can recieve with a deal with the devil. Once created with a sacrifice or a big betrayal on the actual first souls on each speficic devil fruit. Those souls and wills all got passed down for 800 years or more. Trying to live their will forever as something unnatural, but never free again. Maybe even connected to all the different layers of hell. It could be a punishment to be an awaken zoan user or even to be out of magma or a rubber man. In Dantes Inferno people turn into hot melting gold, that burns them, because of their greed.

I think we're distracted by the fruits and the fruits are just a vessels. I think that in the one piece universe when someone dies, if their will is strong it can be transferred into a vessel. I believe the shandorians used their bell to call back the souls of their strongest warriors and those souls were sealed into the fruits on the upper yard creating devil fruits. I believe blackbeard found a way to steal souls/will and that's how he got blackbeard's fruit when he died. this also explains why objects can have "devil fruit powers" they're simply an alternative vessel.

The will of D being the will of devils also makes sense cause of the comment that it will never die. Maybe those who carry the D in their name are the ones whose will cooincides with a devils and therefore they are the ones who can truly awaken a devil fruit? So many potential implications :D

The theory can be true since celestial dragons are portrayed as gods and the people having will of d are considered their enemy. We know that God and Devil are exact opposite making people having d being enemies of celestial dragon and Imu.
