▼About the Sawara Grand Festival
The ``Sawara Grand Festival'' summer festival and autumn festival (UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage/Nationally Designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property) is known as one of the three major float festivals in the Kanto region and has a tradition of about 300 years.
The sound of Sawara Hayashi, one of Japan's three major musical accompaniments, echoes throughout the town, and the sight of passing the eaves of houses through the townscape known as Little Edo (nationally designated Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings) is full of the atmosphere of Edo. It is reminiscent of scenes from the era.
The proud float has a main body made entirely of zelkova wood and is decorated with heavy Kanto-bori carvings, and the top is decorated with large dolls up to 4 meters tall made by master puppeteers of the Edo and Meiji periods. .
During the Yasaka Shrine Gion Festival, a summer festival held in July, 10 floats are pulled around the east side of the Onogawa River (the Honjuku area).
On the other hand, during the Suwa Shrine Autumn Festival in October, 14 floats are pulled around the west side of the Onogawa River (Shinjuku area).
At the Suigo Sawara Dashi Hall, two floats are on display, one for the summer festival and one for the autumn festival.
