I think I am going to have to play this version. The music is still quite good even then!

Well the PC-88's sound is even more limited than the Genesis, having only 3 FM channels and 3 PSG channels. The Genesis had 6 FM channels with a DAC on the YM2612, PLUS a PSG chip from the SMS with 4 channels which consists of 3 square waves, and a noise channel. The fact they fit all this badassery into the PC-88 blows my mind. The magical wizardry of Japanese composers I suppose.

Depends on which version of PC-88 you're referring to. The earliest ones (1981-1982) only had PC Speakers, capable of 1 channel of sound, the second model (1983-1984) had the same PC speaker but also an optional upgrade to include the YM2149F for 3 channels of PSG sound. There were two variants from 1985-1989, one with the YM2203 (three FM channels + integrated YM2149 for three SSG channels, the one you're referring to) and one with the YM2608 + mono ADPCM sample channel, which was capable of six FM channels, 3 SSG channels, and a rhythm sound source capable of playing one of six pre-recorded drum samples. Ys III used the YM2608, I believe, so it wasn't hard for it to sound this good. Yeah play the Genesis version instead, the music sounds just like this with additional PCM drums for extra beefiness, and the graphics look MUCH better, along with having much smoother scrolling. As a matter of fact, it has the smoothest scrolling of any version. It's a shame they never made a Mega-CD port, because it would be the definitive version if it had the PC Engine CD's soundtrack and voiced cutscenes.

@@zanegandini5350 Even if I grew up with the MSX2 version, all nostalgia aside, the Genesis version is hands down the best home console port of the game. Fun fact is that it was ported by Telenet, who were never a really big player (but which I always was fond of).
