Surely adding a weight would add extra momentum to the throw, and also help the thrower feel (being out of sight) exactly where the back end was positioned relative to the tip.

It seems an advantage to this weapon would be throwing it from an elevated position into a choke point ( like animals drinking in a river bend). Do you test this? I wasn't sure if the "silencer" was pertaining to the dart or the atatl noise? Just a thought, if the dart was silenced it would give the thrower more attempts to hit the target and a combined attack would be more fruitful releasing another volley before the first lands.

Mr. B., the anthropological studies i have reviewed; differ some what from your, classic, observations. my research has shown modern, native, users throwing underhand; usually while on the run. any comment to this? rgrds, walt

w yore from what I've seen techniques vary from user to user. I have kinda been digging into this more and more my fascination with native cultures. I have wondered if they even used them side armed as well.

There is another video that shows one person harvesting a 1000+ lb Bison using an Atlatl...What I got out of that video is one person instead of the common image of many with spears conducting a hunt...If anything the extra hands would come in handy in taking the hide and butchering the animal then bringing the meat back to Camp once the animal had been harvested
