Ohio Barn Fire: 44 Horses Lost

In this video, I'm talking about the tragic barn fire that took place on June 8th, 2024, at Dundee Ranch in Ohio. The fire resulted in the deaths of 44 reining horses, including my horse Henry, leaving the entire horse community devastated.

The horse I lost was my first horse and I was 14 it was and still is the worst horror of my left. I own a farm now and I an so overly protective of my horses and have very struck barn rules for their safety . I know all the ways to get them out halters hung a certain way with lead on the front of each stall and the outside doors as well. No extension cored, no fans running at night or if I am not in the barn, no cooking, no smoking near or anywhere on my farm. No hay stored in or too close to my barn fire extinguishers everywhere. Paddock gates open near the barn in case I’d an emergency as there is not time to open gates to turn out horses in a panic. You are right they do not want to leave the barn they feel safe in there. I pray that they all fell a sleep form smoke or toxic gases so they did not suffer. I pray you get another horse soon to help mean your broken heart it will help you heal. ❤️

They are so good for our Souls and I miss him everyday. I am 65 years old now so I won't be getting another horse and even though you can't replace your Henry you can give another horse a home. That moment - when we catch ourselves speaking about our lost beloveds in the present tense - is heartbreaking. Still, I encourage you to continue to speak about Henry in the present tense. Omygosh! I’m so very SORRY! What a horrible thing that happened. I believe all the horses are up in Heaven right now and they are all okay. I pray God heals your heart from this trauma. It was like the Station Nightclub Fire back in 2000. Once the toxic smoke starts, people and animals start to lose consciousness. I’m so sorry for your loss and that of all the other people. It’s very devastating and hard and the general public have shown they have a lack of understanding when it comes to horse knowledge. Even though it's devastating, many of us who lost in this fire take comfort in knowing our horses most likely drifted off before they even knew what was happening. So sorry for your catastrophic loss. I’ve lost pets and it hurts terribly, but to experience this kind of total loss is beyond belief. Many years ago, a dear friend of mine owned a large dairy farm and also raised Morgan and Belgian draft horses. On Christmas Eve 1980, a hobo decided to sleep in the horse barn and being in VT, it was very cold. He started a fire which quickly got out of control. In the end, all 24 horses died and the barn was destroyed. My brother and I spent 2 days clearing debris and burying the horses. I haven’t ridden a horse since. God will heal your broken heart and bring you another special horse for you to ride. I had a special bond with a beautiful Morgan horse named Miss Bunshy and burying her killed my desire to ride. Don’t make that mistake.

I am so, so sorry for all of you. I also have two horses and two Berners. I would absolutely be broken with this. We had a barn fire 4 years ago. It was arson but we were fortunate and we were able to get all the horses out. We did have many horses refuse to leave their stall but we were lucky and got them out. Luckily all of our stalls open to outside paddocks so we were able to reach horses from the outside. So happy to hear that the horses were not scared and they didn’t suffer. It is deeply saddening that anyone would take a tragedy to unleash their wierd negative positions to people who are grieving… I am sure all the folks who are affected know that there are a lot more of us who understand how impossible it is to remove horses/animals in a fire. I have been in a situation with a horse that started to run toward flames even though we were outside… my sincere condolences to you and to all the other owners in this tragic loss of beloved creatures. God bless you. I’m so sorry for your loss. I had a horse for 9 years that I rescued, but I had to rehome him when my husband lost his job and we could no longer afford to feed “Uppintheriggin”. He was primarily my oldest daughter’s horse when she became a teenager. We were so sad to see him leave our farm in 2014. 2 years later, I tragically lost that same daughter to a heart attack at our house, she had just turned 20. Thank you. I can't speak for all barns, but this one was kept very clean and the owners and staff took a lot of pride in keeping it that way. But it is a good reminder to take a look around your own barn and see what you can do to try and prevent things like this from happening. Though in reality sometimes bad things happen no matter how hard we try.

so sorry for your loss. I had to have my only horse put down (due to cancer after 2 failed surgeries to treat him, sadly vets had misdiagnosed him until it was too late). He was only 5 or 6 years old. I'd had him since very young, Many years later I still think of him often as he still should be alive today and I would be showing him.

It is a great saddest. You are right in a aspect addressing what people don't know. My horses were in this situation but a smaller barn. All of them had to be lead out. My guys were the only ones that had halters on. The first to be removed. The others in panick were not easily removed. Because the horses were just sent out of the barn turn and went inside again. They received some burns. I comment on this so people will realize what can happen all barns. I praying for all that lost animals and those that are recovering from this ordeal. God Bless all.

Charlie, I'm so very sorry for your loss!!! We've never met, and this is the first time seeing your channel. I used to be a reiner also, a car accident changed that. But... We now have Malinios's, I train them for dog sports, which I think is a natural progression for people that used to train horses. Thank you, for your insight on the fire. I was so happy to hear you speak about the toxic fumes, being a blessing. What you said is absolute truth "horses will run right back into a burning building" their stall is their home. Please don't let the trolls get to you, they're rampant around dogs as well. 99.9% of the time they don't have any clue about which they try to speak. I lost my OTTB mare 2 years ago. I had her 16 of her 23 years and lost her after a turnout accident. I am in tears after watching this video. Annie was my absolute world, she was my everything, and my heart breaks with you. I hate that anyone would say horrible to you during this time and I am so effing sorry. I don’t have kids, my divorce was finalized a month before I lost Annie. She was my life. I don’t know if I will ever truly stop missing her or the feeling of galloping cross country and jumping the moon with her. People need to understand this is a long lasting grief. Your daily habits change instantly and all of a sudden you feel a different kind of broke because what you knew and did for months and years has been erased right along with your best friend and your partner. Horses are incredibly close with their people, and to go through that loss is one of the worst pains I have personally experienced. Thank you for your bravery and your kindness in the wake of such a horrible time. You have a way of bringing light in a dark place. I hope you can find the peace you need and beautiful memories of Henry always ❤️🐎

Oh my gosh I'm so sorry about the loss of your beloved Annie - I can tell just by your comment how much she meant to you. I lost my heart dog Odin in June 2021 and now Henry in June 2024 so there is a lot of grief and trauma this month. I don't think you ever truly stop missing them and that's ok. They come into our lives and make such an impact, it's important to always remember them and cherish the joy and love they brought to us. Know that you'll see Annie again someday and she'll love you just as much then as she did before. I look forward to the day I can see Odin and Henry again.♥️ Thank you for watching and for your kindness and understanding.♥️ People can be cruel even in the face of such tragedy. This video was just a way for me to talk about some of what happened and my feelings. I honestly didn't think anyone would watch it.
