To be fair, Square stuck to a platform based on which had the most potential. Early days of Nintendo made sense due to sheer market dominance they had. And staying for the 16bit with robust sound chip system for Super Nintendo. Then moving on to Sony for the unparalleled specs of CDROM. Staying for PS2 and PS3 for the similar reason with the disc technology. It's only when just recently when technology caught up with all platform which blur the line.

Pixel remasters is a perfect example of a compilation that should have been multiplat and been on everything. Square also skimped on the physical release. It was supposed to release physically on PS4 as well but that was cancelled. I imported a physical copy for switch from play asia. Just like i bought a physical copy of ff7/ff8 for switch as well as ffx and x-2, ff12 and ff9. I can always dump them and play them on steam deck if I want. But xbox would only benefit from more square titles. Especially when MS did the stupid decision to shut down tango.

95% of games that are released hit PlayStation and Xbox. If it were so unprofitable to release games on Xbox, nobody would put anything on Xbox. I don't think PlayStation 5 sold 50 million units. Personally, I think the real sales number is 18-20 million. I guess the reason I say this is because when it was released in 2020, PlayStation 5 was never left in stores because it fell into the black market, so the real sales number of the console is 50 million. The big thing that Alex is forgetting is that we had a major chip shortage during the COVID-19 pandemic and there wasn't enough PS5s or XBOX Series X|S consoles at the beginning and it DID NOT help that we had a MAJOR scalper issue at the start where legitimate buyers COULD NOT EVEN GET THEIR HANDS ON THE SYSTEMS AT LAUNCH DUE TO THEM BUYING THEM ALL UP and were reselling them for hundreds, thousands and even TENS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS as I have seen a PS5 for as high as (i am not kidding here) $60K and an XBOX Series X for as high as $40K and i believe the most expensive Series S I saw was like $15K (don't take that from me as truth there, I am going from memory here) BUT it was the chip shortage that cause the lack of availability for the first 2 years of the 9th generation cause there was not enough SOCs available to make the consoles at a high enough volume to meet the demand by the customers that did the most damage and the scalpers were still a big belp in the whole mess at the start. Its safe to say that the launch of the 9th generation would go down in video game history as THE ABSOLUTE MESSIEST launch we have EVER had as BOTH systems suffered THE EXACT SAME ISSUES and i cant help but see it being marked as that. Call me a console fanboy all you want but it is why the market penetration isn't there with both systems and is probably why we are seeing more and more first party games being sold on competitor's hardware and is why Square Enix is making this move to being a full-time 3rd party publisher and why FF7 Rebirth and FF16 didn't do as well as the publisher had hoped which made their minds up in giving up as a Sony-first publisher. It just makes too much sense if you put the messy launch of the 9th generation systems into perspective.

As a console owner and also PC player, I'm happy that PC and other platforms get the games, especially PC where you can play the game as you like. Console exclusivity is really bad for FF7. You basically needed to buy a PS4 for 7 Remake, a PS5 for Rebirth and probably a PS5 Pro or PS6 to play the last game in the trilogy. Or, you could theoretically just play all of them on a PC.

Paying for exclusivity was more feasible when games didn't cost hundreds of millions of dollars to make. It was less expensive to bring a game to market and they didn't need to sell anywhere near as many copies to start turning a profit. You can argue about whether or not it'd be better to be multiplatform or not, but the point is that you could still turn a profit even selling on only one platform. Nowadays, AAA budgets or so out of control that even with aggressive monetization, battle/season passes, and DLC schemes, not having a game on every platform that can run it day one is basically shooting cutting off your legs and trying to win a sprint against Usain Bolt in his prime.

I feel like there is one problem with this that I think will result in companies backtracking on this idea. Without exclusives what reason is there to buy a console? That's basically one of the main reasons Google stadia died. It had zero exclusives and every game it did have was always the worst version. It will basically result in consoles becoming completely obsolete and making everyone go to something like steam where companies like Sony have far less control. So I feel like this is gonna be a temporary thing at least that's what I think, I could be entirely wrong. Only time will tell I suppose.
