I installed a J&L OSC oil catch can/oil separator on my 09' 300C 5.7L Hemi at 53,886 miles in June 2024, out of curiosity, I just checked it today after about 1500 miles, it was about 1/4 full. I'm so glad I decided to invest in this catch can/oil separator, it is definitely working to keep the oil vapors from returning into the engine.

I guess I'm lucky on my 19 F 150 3.5 52k miles now OEM PCV tube was dry, no residue. Tried a JLT at about 40k out of curiosity. 2 oil changes about 7k and only had a film of oil in the can, not even enough to absorb with a towel. Scoped the intake runners, nice and shiny valves, slight discoloration. Pulled the can gave it to a friend with a higher mileage 2015 F 150. First oil change he had almost 1/4 can of liquid. So the cans definitely do work.

Good to know that Driven Wild actually, “doesn’t recommend any modification”. So that would include catch cans too! Why spend so much time and effort on a product you don’t recommend?

Actually replacing the stock air oil separator with a catch can on some engines like BMW's M52 M52tu and M54 does boost performance throughout the entire powerband. It even improved my mpg. I went from 12.4 mpg to 13.5 mpg in the city. On my car the main reason for me doing the CCV delete is because the stock system drains everything it catches back into the oil pan.

So does the internal filter consist of one of those STAINLESS "SCRUBBY PADS"? My hope was to see what the internals were and a description on HOW the "CATCH PART" actually worked!
@bigworldpartyАй бұрын
That interests me as well, because I've noticed some catch cans have a robust large filter screen assembly, and others don't have much of anything. I'd want a decent filter to seperate the oil, rather than have it travel right out the hose and back into the engine.

Wish they produced a larger can so it could be changed every oil change without the fear of it overflowing. After all, their official video says to expect 1oz per every 1000 miles. Most people change their oil every 5,000 miles. Otherwise, great product!

I ran one of his catch cans on my F150. It definitely catches oil and contaminants. I now have a 2.3 L in my new bronco. But before I buy a can got a couple of general questions/observations. One, isn’t adding this can going to make the PVC function less efficiently, and add a lower pressure if you will? Two, I’m still under warranty, and I believe that if there was some engine failure with the direct injection and PVC, that warrantee would be void. Finally, I intend to keep this bronco as long as I’ve kept my 1975 version, I’m most likely going to have to walnut blast the intake valves in time regardless if I run a catch can or not, right? Thank you I really enjoy watching your channel

My question is...why J&L? I see quite a few that "look" the same. Is there some kind of internal advantage that I don't see? I'd rather pay $40 vs $160...
@CapnDanTreasures4 ай бұрын
Hi Joe, my thoughts on this are... I've always believed in the fact that... whether it be good or bad... you get what you pay for. Here is a question to ask yourself. Is it CHEAP and INEXPENSIVE or just cheaper/less expensive? I invested a good amount of money in my car, and to spend an extra $160 to protect that investment, to me, is well worth the extra $120 over buying a $40 catch can, that may not be worth it and may have to be replaced because of quality issues. Because then you're out even more money. I went with the fact that it is American made, and not from a foreign country that may have lesser standards than the USA. I would imagine that the concept of all of them is the same. However, some may have a slight difference in performance, or material quality etc. etc. The J&L OSC catch can that I received came fully assembled and ready to install. The hoses were already set up on the unit for intake and output, so there was no confusion during the installation process of which side the hoses go on and where they get connected on the engine. Depending on the manufacturer, (who may not determine which side is which), it just might matter which side is input and/or output. If you don't get them right, it's not going to perform correctly... just a thought... By no means am I trying to tell you what to do. You do what makes you happy. I just wanted to give you a different viewpoint on this topic. Have a great day... Cap'n Dan arrr

@@BirdDogOffRoadAdventures every engine will produce some oil in a catch can, it's just not necessary or I believe beneficial for the 2.7 in the Bronco. The port injection will keep the valves plenty clean. In these times, save your money for things that will truly make a difference.

PCV systems on a turbo engine slowly oil fill the lower levels of the things Intercooler as well as dumping oxygen deprived combustion gasses and oil into the engine intakes. IF you choose a catch can device .. As opposed to venting directly to atmosphere ? At least buy one with a useable capacity A quart or more Unless you like emptying /cleaning out a tea cup size thing every couple of weeks.

i think it voids the engine warranty on most cars.my hyundai santa fe has a hundred thousand mile ,10 year warranty.the service mechanics say they never had to deal with carboned up intake valves .even though they say there is some carbon on the back of the intake valves,its not enough to effect the running of the engine .they say in high millage engines the deposits can get big ,they just break off and get sucked in the cylinder and disinagrate The mechanics at honda told me the same thing ,and that they never had to take an intake manafold off and walnut blast the valves.the cars tat are the most vulnerale to this are vehicals that are run exsessively hard and engines that are real high millage. .these senereos cause the engines to produce allot more blow by gasses.Another factor is not changing the oil often enough,and or using a cheap oil both of which is oil that is more volatile ,meaning it evaperates quicker.Use a good quality full synthetic oil which is a lot less volatile,and change it at 6000 miles.I have been a certified mechanic for 45 years, and work on newer cars daily. i forgot to mention, that if you suspect that you excessive carbon build up on the valves thats affecting engine preformance,there is a spray kit you can buy for under $20 that you spray into the intake manafold 2 or 3 different times while its running ,that has been proven to dissolve most of the carbon build up to a point its not a problem any more.

Sure beats having carbon build-up on the intake valve for sure. People that says not needed just never check their direct injection to truely know how bad it is with the carbon build-up on the intake valve. I use a boroscope to check my intake and it is bad, but not to the point of complete clog. Having a oil catch can can greatly reduce the carbon build-up on the intake valve.
@stephenbloom254511 ай бұрын
Absolutely unnecessary for your direct injection engine. All you need is a good synthetic oil with a good synthetic media oil filter. I’ve got a 2011 f150 3.5 ecoboost with 465,000 miles on it with no catch can. I’ve never had any valve issues, zero turbo issues. You do get a little better performance with a catch can but 99% of drivers can care less. When properly installed there’s some benefit and it’s your vehicle, do A’s you please but it’s not a necessity.

How does synthetic oil help with oil vapor coating the intake valves?
@stephenbloom254511 ай бұрын
@@DrivenWildOutdoors it’s not the oil that cooks on the back side of the valves it’s the 40 micron carbon contaminates that cause the coking issue. The oil vapor will burn in the combustion process.
@andrewwilson40928 ай бұрын
@@stephenbloom2545 Exactly. I was sold on Synthetic oil back when I had a Suzuki Katana that had air/ Oil cooling . At an oil change with regular oil, there was tons of build up on the head under the valve covers when I would check valve clearance. With Synthetic , Zero Coked oil. That and my Dad had a Piper Cherokee and the FAA extended mandatory tear downs if you ran synthetic. I see the same results in my Harley.
