Clear concise video. Thanks. I have a 2013 CRV and I have been putting 5 qts in and the level looks fine. I have been changing my own oil since 1978 and I learned one important thing. Crack the oil filter loose first especially the first time. Just in case the filter was over tightened at the factory. Ramming screwdrivers through an oil filter sucks and I'll bet we've all been there.

Mike Campbell busted two screwdrivers doing that. On the same friggen filter. Shop said they just hand tightened, must have had Andre the giant as an employee.

I just fill it up the bottom of the top hole in the dipstick... It is always a little more than 4 quarts... These guys are shorting the vehicle about half a quart or so.... I like it to have a little extra oil in case it turns out to use it or leak it out somewhere...

There's a lot of shyster oil changer's out there that always underfill. I've seen dealership's that only fill to the bottom mark. Saves them a lot of money over time. When I look at a vehicle, one of the first things I do is check fluids. If the oil is low, I immediately knock a lot of money off what the vehicle is worth to me. We drove 1-1/2 hours to look at a car and the oil wasn't even on the dipstick. How stupid do you have to be, to not make sure the fluids are good when trying to sell a vehicle?

you should leave the engine oil cap open when you remove the drain plug.

Stupid video. Unscrew oil cap leave a bit open, remove drain pug and drain oil. Remove oil filter and check to make sure the filter seal comes off with the filter and not stuck on the housing. Re-install drain plug. Because of vertical placement of oil filter, put fresh oil in the filter and install filter. Make sure to lubricate the filter seal with a bit of motor oil with your finger. Do not over tighten. Put fresh oil in the opening from the oil cap that was previously opened. Do not put more than the dipstick tells you to. Close cap. Start engine run for a couple of minutes. Turn off engine and let stand 5 minutes and recheck oil level. Adjust accordingly to dipstick marking.

That filter's vertical orientation would allow you to prefill it with 1/3 - 1/2 qt. of oil to help reduce a dry start. Just keep pouring oil in until the filter won't absorb any more, then install.

I just did it on my 2013 CR-V for my first time today. A few tips for beginners: 1. Use a car ramp, engage hand break and use wheel chocks 2. Wear eye protection and utility gloves, you don't want to get hot oil on your skin or into your eyes 3. Go over the steps in your head couple times before hands on. Oils do spill and be ready Good luck and have fun

P.S. It's tight in terms of workspace up there, so if you can't get the oil filter off by hand and don't have huge channel locks, then grab some 100-200 grit sandpaper. Wrap the sandpaper around filter and twist with your hand.

4:45 Already addressed. And since you can't possibly get all the old oil out, this video is correct in how to handle this. You are incorrect. You don't simply add the maximum amount per capacity specs because it's possible to overfill that way.
@uc383
@uc383 4 жыл бұрын
@@BPoweredLove Exactly. Best way is to measure the dipstick before and then dump your oil into an old 5 quart oil container. Then refill with the same amount, usually about 4 quarts since as you stated you never fully get all the old oil out of the system. Then with the CR-V I've found it best to let it sit overnight and check the dipstick again the next morning and top it off as needed. It seems to take more time for it to drain all down than other cars.

@@2carpros I basically got the same response when I tried to buy a torque wrench at a local Sears hardware store years ago (RIP). I told the guy why I was buying it - I had to ask because it was locked in a case - and he actually discouraged me. "You don't need that. Just get it good enough." That might explain why the store closed a few years ago, along with all of the other Sears hardware stores in town.... I kinda wish now that I'd have bought it. Probably it was a nice wrench, and cheaper than what I could get nowadays. (Or maybe not. Icons at HF are supposedly pretty good.) I like to use the German spec on my Corolla - gudensnug. New drain plug gasket every time - not sure what they cost, but it's less than an oily driveway and a dry engine. Then hold it on the spot where you removed it and rotate it the WRONG way a few times to be sure the threads aren't crossed. One full revolution is really the max that you should need, but two is just as good. Then rotate it the opposite (correct) way, slowly until you can tell you've caught the threads. The plug should rotate very smoothly until it's all the way in. Then turn until it's as tight as you can get with your fingers. Then put your wrench on and turn it 1/2 to 3/4 more. If you're straining or using a cheater bar, you're probably over spec and liable to need a new oil pan. Be careful and give it a shot. Ask a friend who knows what they are doing to watch and be available if you need a driveable car to get to the store in case you forgot something. At home oil changes are not fun, and they aren't much cheaper than going someplace, but I still do mine myself.

New washers are about 25 cents each on ebay. If you plan on doing your own oil changes I recommend an oil drain valve which replaces the plug. Just open the lever with your fingers and you will never need a wrench again.. They retail for around $20.
