When I change oil I usually put a square aluminum disposable baking pan under the filter to catch the drips.

I'll also add the $20 to $25 electric pumps sold on Ebay are also junk. Mine is the model with the yellow end plate.

I like your technique for oil filter change with bag but when you pulled out the old one , why not keep the bag there for like 60 seconds to let most of the old oil drip into bag instead of all over engine compartment. Then after 60 seconds wipe it with a rag, then put new filter on. I think you would have very little mess if any. Just my 2 cents
