Something I always ask anyone talking about oil coolers is have you run an oil temp gauge, in a proper location, to see exactly what temps your engine sees before deciding to install? I often think of way back when I was a new mini owner and was driving mine in the dead of winter. It was cold enough to make the engine unable to heat up properly at highway speeds just due to the air passing over the engine. Only way around this was to block off the grill completely. So, what about an oil cooler? If you only drive your mini in the near same condition, fine, but the temp on a crisp autumn morning and a hot summer day have to be enough of a difference where a oil might be overkill. I would first (if you haven’t already and sorry if I missed it) install a oil temp gauge and really keep an eye on how the temp reacts to all the different temps you typically see while behind the wheel.

This is great advice, I went ahead and pinned your comment. I have had a good deal of (anecdotal) experience with my current setup and have seen the variation in oil pressure based on the outside temperatures. I find that here in southern NC the need for some sort of supplementary cooling is definitely there especially during the summers because it gets HOT. I might add a follow-up video to this with a little more info because managing when you are cooling the oil is super important in more mild climates, arguably like you said it might not even be necessary.

In my supra I ditched the stock pressure based oil cooler setup and installed a custom sump-to-sump setup with an electric oil pump wired to a relay controlled by an oil temperature gauge. I can set on the gauge what temp I want the pump to come on, and change it on the fly. This is the best oil cooler setup in my opinion as it has no pressure drop caused by an in-line cooler and does not bleed off pressure as some thermostatic systems do. The pump is a little loud but I recon with some sound deadening will quiet it down nicely

Will definitely add an oil cooler to my list of possible upgrades. The summer temps here in TX can be brutal to a mini where I find over heating at high risk a lot. Thanks Cole

Yeah, no joke I bet it gets even hotter there in Texas than in Charlotte. Its usually in the upper 90s to very low 100s during the summer with 80-100% humidity. That's one of my main motivators with the cooler.

The most important thing when adding an oil cooler to your Mini, is to run it with a thermostat in my opinion. Therefore the engine is able to get up to it's operating temperature more easily, without the cooler starting to cool it right down, when you drive the first couple of miles. I have just simply connected a sandwich plate with an internal thermostat to the oil filter housing and it works just great! So for road use I would always use a thermostat, because we're basically still driving under normal road condition.However on race minis with constant high revs it's a completely different story... By the way, are you happy with your 123-distributor? Thinking of getting one myself

I haven't had a chance to really play with it much because I messed up the mechanical timing. I am very excited to use it and play with the advance curves once its all back together. I have to say, setting the static timing when putting it in, was SUPER easy though. Huge fan of that.

Hello, I am a lover of the mini classico, from Mexico and I want to know if you can also give the advice in Spanish, in Mexico we have many minis and repair them ourselves. Your examples are very interesting and useful. Greetings.

Me encantaría hacer videos en español también. Aunque no hablo español, en realidad estoy traduciendo esto con el traductor de google. ¡Gracias por ver mis videos! Realmente aprecio el apoyo.

what are your thoughts on running a thermostat for the oil cooler?
@classicminidiy

I was tossing the idea around with this setup. I would love to try it but I don’t know that it’s strictly needed on these old minis.
