One of the world’s last remaining Arctic wildernesses is under threat. The Trump administration has recently finalized plans to open up Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas drilling: a move that could totally destroy this area of natural beauty. ↠Subscribe: kzbin.info...
The ANWR isn’t just visually stunning, but hugely important to wildlife. Species like caribou and polar bears rely on the coastal plain to breed and raise their young. And with climate change already altering the Arctic beyond recognition, this new decision could spell disaster.
➡️ Find out more about the threat to the ANWR and learn how you can help: visit www.protectthearctic.org to support an initiative to save this region. And please, if you haven’t already done so, subscribe to our channel to stay in the loop.

Did you know that pregnant polar bears dig dens in snowdrifts that form in autumn? 🐾 They give birth in mid-winter and remain in their dens until spring when their cubs are finally large enough to survive the rigors of outside Arctic conditions. Seismic surveys and oil drilling will scare them out earlier, which could be fatal for the young.

May I suggest a video for REAL ECOLOGICAL PLANETARY HOPE ...? Premise: DEMAND drives oil exploration, people do not WANT to drive; they have to. Economics: You CANNOT make oil-consumption decline via "supply-side" pressures. The suggestion is to embrace a return to "noble wars" in the ME as "ecological solution." Buy Teslas..? Consumes more CO2 creating the car than a 76 Chrysler uses in it's LIFE. Should people stop going to work / school to pursue advancement? No. ENCOURAGE NEW NUCLEAR REACTOR DESIGNS! The LOWEST CO2 OF ANY BASELOAD-ENERGY SOURCE. HIGH-TEMP / LOW-PRESSURE REACTORS Allow amazing CHEMISTRY! Like CARBON-NEUTRAL DIESELS. Desalination plants ... as potable water isn't a "horizon issue" -- it's a NOW issue. Discourage the lawsuits that drive reactor prices up -- through increased investor-risk. Discourage the lawsuits that cause the EARLY CLOSING of Nuclear reactors. The complaint is that "there's waste" ..? As opposed to the waste that's EXTERNALIZED..? And requires more energy to recapture than you got out of energy sources IN THE FIRST PLACE? Go LOOK at how much "nuclear waste" France has. And again -- this is about educating people to apply political capital towards R&D. NOT reactors design selection based on waste that's useful to build atomic arsenals. Ask any engineer ... what's more efficient than nuclear..? Ask any engineer if it's efficient to extract energy from small contrasts in temp..? Specifically, compressing water so you can keep it from boiling -- vs ambient temperature. In contrast ... reactors which have a primary loop from SALTS..? Liquid from ~400 C - 1200 C ..? Think about how EASY & efficient energy extraction'll be. Please, save that area, save the planet bc it saves us. Great. Yes. Whether global warming is real or BS. REMOVE that argument from people. NUCLEAR IS SIMPLY SAFER, FEWER DEATHS PER TwHr, LOW CO2, Baseload, and no BS. Make that the basis ... the infrastructure -- in LARGE MFR-ing, not onesy-twosy ... But manufactured in FACTORIES (as is possible with HIGH TEMP, Low pressure reactors). UNTIL people get that message..? you're NEVER going to get consensus. Especially when some people's ulterior motives are to encourage "low energy lives" ... Which means deaths, misery, etc. And OMG, whatever you do -- DO NOT research the ways you already depend on nuclear! From nuclear MEDICINES. To nuclear inspection of aircraft wings for cracks. To RADIATING FOOD so post-operative people can't get sick! Or all the medicines created from nuclear ... and -- space exploration, from PLUTONIUM Batteries that last looong time. :) As good as a hydro-carbon is ..? In terms of ENERGY DENSITY? A FISSION bond is 2,000,000 x as powerful as THE BEST oil. But people wanna wait 50 more years to do Fusion because... it MIGHT work?? No no, I don't want a wheel yet. I'm waiting for teleportation.

@@burninghard Yeah, right, Bernie the friend of the working class, who said "white people don't know poverty", Bernie, the anti-establishment, who used to yell about "millionaires and billionaires", then when he became a millionaire quickly and subtly switched to just yelling about "billionaires", Bernie the rebel, who got screwed over by the DNC *twice*, and both times fell in line with the party candidate, Bernie the environmentalist, who used to party with the leaders of the Sovietunion, who're responsible for way worse things done to environment. This is a perfect example of why Trump won in 2016, and will win this November. He's doing exactly what he said he was going to do. He's not a hypocrite like Biden and Sanders, and Obama and Killery. And despite that I don't even like the guy! PS Also, I'm not American. I'm just sitting here with the popcorn.

@@Verebazs Stop smearing Sanders. He surely has some big flaws but what you bring up is just a smear (well except that he fell in line with the DNC). "He's doing exactly what he said he was going to do." Oh really? Is that so? He said he would bring jobs back and did not. He said he would build a wall and Mexico would pay for it. He did not and they did not pay for it. He said he would not touch social security and he did try. He said he would give everybody better healthcare and he did not. He said he would get us out of the wars and he did not. He said he would cut taxes for the middle class and low income people and he did not. @@burninghard "He said he would bring jobs back and did not." Yes he did. US had lowest unemployment in 40 years before lockdown, and FYI, it's the democrat ran states that suffered the worst recession from that. "He said he would build a wall and Mexico would pay for it." Actually he did. He built a legal framwork, that's harder to bypass than an actual wall, and by the way, he's actaully building one. There was a lot of delay with it, yes, but why? Because Democrats, like Sander and Pelosi who were *PRO-WALL* right up until Trump announced he wants to build one (another fine example of Bernie's hypocrisy) blocked him repeatedly. And Mexico was actually paying for it before Covid hit, through the new tradedeal, that replaced NAFTA. "He said he would get us out of the wars and he did not." Yeah, and guess who were the loudest opponents of him pulling out of Iraq and Syria (the latter of which Biden as Obama's VP had a hand in instigating, and the former of which was voted for by Killery, despite her being in opposition under Bush)? Pelosi and squad. "He said he would cut taxes for the middle class and low income people and he did not." Eh, yes he did. And I'm in a bubble? Dude, stop watching CNN. I as an outsider European seem to know more about what Trump's been doing than you. Pull your head out of your ass. And BTW Bernie did actually do all those things. I looked into it.

I truly wish people would look at this situation objectively and stop spreading cherry picked points of data to fit their narrative. The part that is being opened up to drilling is only about 8% of the total ANWR area and only a fraction of that 8% will have any development at all. The Porcupine Caribou herd will not be harmed. I work at an oil field right near the border of the 1002 area, (Proposed Drilling Area), and the Caribou walk freely all around us. They hide under our elevated buildings to escape the sun and mosquitoes, they walk effortlessly under our pipelines (which have engineered animal crossings that aren't really a necessity), and they are not disturbed whatsoever. We are not destroying this land and it will be reclaimed to it's natural state when we leave. If anyone thinks what we are doing is bad then I implore you to come to the North Slope of Alaska and actually spend some time in the area that of topic. Please stop being keyboard warriors and opposing everything Trump wants just because he's Trump and stop opposing everything because you're on some kind of environmental bandwagon. Be objective, looks at all of the facts, and make informed decisions. I truly support the conservation of animals and the environment but that doesn't mean we are not allowed to touch either one. There are responsible hunters, there are responsible oil producers, and those are facts that need to be recognized. It can be done responsibly.

Hi Brian, Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences. It's nice to hear that you truly support conservation and that you're also focused on preserving the last remaining natural habitats of wildlife. The current discussion isn't about one more oil drilling station it's about the whole process of opening the 1002 area for development. Seismic surveys for example could be really bad for polar bears as they could scare the young ones out of their dens too early. What are your personal experiences with seismic surveys so far? We're always interested in insights straight from "the field".
@brian-in-ak
@brian-in-ak 3 жыл бұрын
@@terramater so far my experience is that I haven't seen, or heard of, much seismic activity at all on the North Slope. The formations we produce from are different from the ones you hear of in places like North Dakota, and therefore require different drilling techniques, depths, etc., which don't seem to produce the same seismic results. I do say this from an experience point of view, not a an academic one. I haven't performed any formal research, just telling what I've seen, and heard, from my time there.
