Hey Mike, I bought one 20mm f/2.8 Ais in pieces, and put it back thanks to your video. Of course there were no marks placed by the one who "disassembled" the lens, but little by little, test after test, I could find the proper way to set the inner floating ring. luckily, the several screw holes in that ring and the long apertures in the coupling chrome semicircle allow for virtually any combination. PS. with the floating ring out of position, not only at close range, but also at infinity the quality of the edges drops dramatically! thanks again, keep doing your great tutorials!

Hi Mikeno, Im working on an Ai-s 20mm 2.8 and I wasn't able to mark the helicoids due to a stuck focus ring I didnt want to force. Think you could do a video about re-greasing the focusing system on this lens? maybe you could include - caliper information, number of turns on the helicoids, and where the slots and indices should line up acording to the main index marker? There's nothing out there on this. You'd be the first! And I'm sure many others would find it hepful!

It doesn't look like it has been used a lot (still looks brand new) so I will try adding some tri-flow first. Thanks for the great advice!

Hi there Many Thanks for your video. I have a 20mm 1:2.8 with haze in the two small sticked together central elements. Is there any chance to have your advise as to how to separate them and clean the haze? Many thanks for sharing your very important and valuable work.

My 20 2.8 copy has some minute play on the focus ring and was wondering if it could be helicoid wear or just wrong lubrication but it's nicely damped and smooth otherwise (although not as 'loose' as yours). I was hoping you would do a video on the 2.8 one day to see if there is some way to 'adjust' the play like you can with the 35 1.4 ai-s, but unfortunately the focus system is different indeed. Any thoughts how to fix this? Thank you for the interesting and excellent video as usual!

Well Maurits, I would guess it's the grease that are dried out after many years of use, or, of course it could also be the helicoid that are a bit worn out during many years of use. You could also try to add a little amount of "TRI-FLOW" on the helicoid, it's with PTFE and I have tried with many Nikon lenses with big succes, of course it's best if you can clean out the old dried but you can give it a go. The only problem with just adding some new thinner lubricate is that, if there is some small fragments just like small stones and dust, it can make it more worse because it will go into the thread and make some small mark's, so take care, it's always the best if one can disassemble the focus system, and make a proper cleaning of the helicoid's and then re-grease.

Great video as always ! I have to remove back collar in order to install it in a metabones speedbooster. Could you confirm that the 3 screws can be removed with a PH000 driver ?

I had to put some acetone on the screws before trying to take them out.

Hello and many thanks for your video. My Nikon 20 mm AF-D has the aperture blades stuck in open position. I have tried to remove the frontal group but unlike the Ai-s and AF versions, removing the rubber focus ring the screw access holes do not appear, just only a cello tape covering an all around slot. Tape sticking versus screw fastening in the AF-D version?

The AF-D and the Ai-S are not at all made the same way, so you really have to take care and remember to set small mark's before disassemble the focus helicoid's, even if you need to repair the sticky aperture blades. I will sooner make a video about the Nikkor 20mm 1:2.8 D, because the lens I have simply need to be re-greased.

How do you adjust for infinity focus on this lens? Is it the three screws on the outermost brass ring? I have a copy of this lens which focuses past infinity.

Hello and thank you for sharing your knowledge! So I have the opportunity to buy a “slightly hazed” Nikkor 20mm 2.8d for a little bit more than 100.-€. Wich Lens from Nikon is the most similar in terms of construction and how do I clean hazed lenses? Is Balsam separation a known problem of a 20mm 2.8d? I know it’s a bit selfish but is it possible for to make a video about the 20mm 2.8d in the near future? There are one or two “tutorials” as PDF around the internet but they are anything but professional. Thank you!

If you ask if the Ai-s Nikkor 20mm 1:2.8 is the same as the AF-D Nikkor 20mm 1:2.8 I will say NO. But I have a AF Nikkor 20mm (non D version) which I will make a film about sooner, because it need some cleaning and new grease
