Today, Helen is teaching you her favorite lesson. Why? Helen always wants you to ask why. If you can paint a really good apple, you can then use that apple-painting expertise in all the other subject matter you encounter. Why? Because an apple has shape, texture, shine, color, and tone. Listen for her story, at the start of the lesson, about the artist she studied under, Maximillian Roscoe.
Helen Van Wyk is quickly recognized by thousands of artists as the host of PBS's Welcome to my Studio television show. Helen took the time to teach us the principles and reasons behind painting each element in the progression of a work. Helen's sensibility in basic natural fundamentals taught us we can paint anything by employing these basics. Subject matter was a minor consequence to Helen. Using the basics, thousands of artists received the confidence to paint any type of subject.
Subscribe now and embark on an unforgettable journey of artistic discovery with Helen.

I had to do a little research about the 5 bumps on a red delicious apple being due to the flower. Results (from ChatGpt): The presence of the five bumps on a red delicious apple is indeed connected to the original five-petaled structure of the apple flower, reflecting the inherent symmetry and segmentation that starts in the flower and continues through to the mature fruit.

Helen’s handling of the brush- is like no other- It is her signature brushstrokes and ability to see and mix colors that makes her works stand out-

Very good lesson. I mostly learned from the fantastic commentary she uses during the lesson. Her explanations are clear and insightful, providing me deeper understanding of the techniques. I think it's a difficult thing to lecture and paint at the same time, but wow, Helen always does it with ease. Her ability to seamlessly blend instruction with demonstration is truly impressive. She makes complex concepts accessible and inspires confidence. Overall, an exceptional teacher who elevates the learning experience.

@Toqueville2023 - Well, in this particular lesson, she doesn't say. She's told that story before during other lessons, and if there's a definitive answer, this post will be updated.

I am guilty of making the cast shadow the same color value as the subjects shadow. An Ah Hah moment. Thank you, Helen.

I can’t get over how thick her paint is when she’s applying it. But the finished painting looks so smooth. I am so use to painting with acrylics and never tried oil.

Thanks for your comment. If you decide to try oil painting, you might enjoy the different experience it offers compared to acrylics, although there are concerns such as odor, slow drying time, toxicity, cleaning ...etc.

Just amazing. I never learned how to paint realistically and a lot of us painters dont even know how to do this and we went to art school. Paintings that sell today usually are not realistic and you look at Francis Bacon or Gerard Richter or Marlene Dumas and you are left thinking. Will I learn realism or will I do my own thing. Even if we learned this realism we have to consider who would buy them As the Chinese are flooding the market even in France with master copies. Yes what to do in art????

It's a difficult road to navigate, indeed. Wrestling with the complexities of artistic identity, market demands, and practical challenges is something many likely face. I'll pin your comment to the top for a while to encourage others to provide some insightful perspectives and points of view. Stay positive.

Sadly, Helen died in 1994. She was a fantastic artist/teacher. The video quality is not up to current standards but her teachings remain as current as ever. Thanks for the support and please enjoy these remastered archived lessons from Helen. She really enjoyed teaching oil painting to her students.
