It is reassuring to see that it is NOT as easy and magically done as other artist might seem. You demonstrated your process of how to see, think, analyse, correct to achieve your painting. THIS IS HARD WORK. It makes it easier for the rest of us who struggle knowing were not alone. And there is hope to succeed. No magic, just knowledge, work and perseverance. Thank you.

Love this! I seriously don't know how you talk about what you're doing while you are doing it. I think my head would explode. Thanks for the great tutorial and for letting artists know it's "OK" to paint with black. I don't understand why some artists get so preachy about NEVER using black. I really like your color grids, but have no ability to be that organized. Kudos!

Shelley Hanna thank you! Yes, always and never are both taboo words for me! Big red flags. And I adore ivory black as a pigment. Glad you enjoyed the video.

And also, even though the model objects are dark before a dark background, the final painting is beautifully luminous.

Wow.... absolutely blows my mind ...your discipline is amazing ....so do you really only use one brush and keep cleaning it ????.
@SarahSedwick2 жыл бұрын
Most of the time, I DO only use one brush for an entire painting - if it's a small piece like this one. With larger pieces, a range of brush sizes is helpful - but I never do the thing where I use one brush for each color, or one for lights and one for darks. It's too confusing for me, and I always end up mixing them up!

When looking at the photograph, I really think the darkest dark is the side of the cup, on the inside of the handle.

Sarah how often do you clean/wipe your brush throughout the process, do you just wipe on cloth? Thanks, great video.
@SarahSedwick4 жыл бұрын
I wipe it off pretty often - I'm using blue shop towels, those paper towlels for mechanics.

Thank you for this! I love your tutorials. When you started with your darkest darks, did you use a medium in your paint? Or is it just paint? You may have addressed this in the video and I just missed it. Thanks again!

Thanks Nicholas! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I usually use Gamblin's solvent-free gel, and that was very likely in my paint, though I can't be 100% sure I added it to everything. I love that stuff!

Sarah Sedwick Thank you! I’ve just started oil painting, and I’m mostly interested in still-life at this time. I have a basic understanding of values and color mixing. What are some basic still-life exercises you’d recommend to help me get better? Thanks in advance, your videos are so helpful!
