This was awesome and your tips were great! You sold me on mixed media! I’ll stop being such an oil pastel purist and stop fighting to get skinny tree branches in the distance with a thick oil pastel. I loved the hints about throwing in opposite shades to make a color richer, too. It really does work.

I like the term "visually stimulating." One day I'll be able to paint loose and impressionistic but today I'm still a bit too tight. That's okay though, it's part of my artistic journey.
@maritafrazer5839 Жыл бұрын
It's hard for me to be loose too but I needed to try to break away from the crazy detailed things I've painted in the past. This one took me 2 days and I'm reasonably happy with it. Good Luck on your journey.

It’s so fun! I have both the PR and the mungyo, of the two I favor the mungyo the formula is more consistent than the set of PR I have is. That being said I love love love the colors I have in the PR set and was thrilled to get them at an absolute steal when I bought them. I’ve used paper blending stumps and the rubber tool and I love how little mess there is with the rubber tool over the stumps. I cannot for the life of me get them to blend with my fingers though, lol maybe I’ll try her glove tip as it’s totally possible it is a texture issue, I don’t even touch soft pastels or chalk for that very reason lol.

Gorgeous! My husband who is a muggle -) loved it too. Have you tried the Winsor & Newton Studio Collection Colored Pencils? Blick has them for $25 for the full 48 set. W&N says they are lightfast - a rep said they used the Cotman pigments. W&N hasn't published the lightfast ratings though. I have a smaller set - they are very pigmented and go down fairly soft similar to Prisma Colors. Not available as open stock. Might be a good option for those looking for an inexpensive set with good lightfastness.
@thefrugalcrafter3 жыл бұрын
No I haven't because I think it's a red flag when a legacy company releases a product in a set and no open stock or specific lightfast info. It tells me they have no intention of supporting the product. I wouldn't mind trying them but it kids of smells like a cash grab to me.
@elaineacree3 жыл бұрын
@@thefrugalcrafter I know what you mean about the cheap attempt to offer low quality with a major brand name - don't care for that either! But, the new W&N Studio Collection Pencil lines along with the new fineliners are being marketed on the W&N web page as part of the Graphic Arts line. W&N had a gaping hole in their Mixed Media/Graphic Art offerings. The new pencils and fineliners are being marketed side by side with the ProMarkers, drawing inks and charcoal. Looks like the pencils and fineliners are a serious attempt to ramp up their Mixed Media/Graphic Arts game. www.winsornewton.com/na/ W&N is VERY slow to publish lightfast ratings even with new colors in the professional watercolor line. W&N does rigorous lightfast testing, for years apparently -). I totally agree with you that I would STRONGLY prefer that W&N would publish the lightfast ratings on individual pencils. On the Studio Collection Coloured Pencil web page it says "Studio Collection colour pencils have a high lightfast rating based on ASTM testing, which means your work won't fade with time." Sounds very encouraging, but SHOW US THE NUMBERS!!!! www.winsornewton.com/row/graphic-art/pencils/colour-pencils-studio-collection/ Derwent's eyepopping Chromaflow pencils are gorgeous but Derwent's only claim on lightfastness is that they are comparable to other pencils in the same price range. 24 Chromaflow's at $35 or 48 W&N Studio Collection at $25 makes for an interesting price, quality and lightfastness comparison! Chromaflow's are made in the UK while W&N are made in Viet Nam so production costs are very different for these 2 brands.

Hi! Sennelier has a fixative designed especially for oil pastels, look it up as "d'Artigny" Once applied, it is dry to the touch, which oil pastels never are otherwise. I keep my oil pastels painting covered with a sheet of wax paper in a drawer, if I am not hanging it up on a wall. This stops the smudging and keeps the painting in good shape.

I like to spray a layer of gesso onto my paper. It makes blending a lot easier. I got my hand on Ghiant transparent gesso in a spray can, so I can preserve the color of the paper. The spray can in the absence of an air gun helps me to quickly apply an even coat without the need for sanding. Using fewer layers helps to preserve the structure of the paper, adding more grip but the oil and wax on the surface instead of seeping into the paper, thereby forming a stronger bond. With the wax and oils staying on the surface it lowers the resistance hence the pigments glide on the surface much easier. At least that's my theory. 😀
