Ship displaces water in channel resulting in miniature tsunami. Water is pulled out, then rushes back in.
Huge oil tanker creates miniature tsunami by displacing water as it moves. The resulting wave is basically a tsunami, but on a much smaller scale.
This wave completely towers over, and submerges a beach along the waterway.

Fascinating example of how tsunamis really work.

Cool and weird, I've never heard of this phenomenon. I know those ships are huge and should make some waves with their passing but the fact they suck the water away first is strange.

Amazing !!!! Even considering it looks like the tanker is going so slow.

Best video I've seen on water displacement.

I took another video yesterday. Tide was low and the tanker was loaded down sitting very low in the water. It pulled back a massive volume of water. kzbin.info/www/bejne/naKwiqd7r5KWrpY

Impressive that it draws that much water away as far as it is, and floods it back in!

Also pushes bait along with wave. Throw castanet right on top of it. 🤙

How is it displacing that much water? How deep is that channel? Visually, it just doesn't make sense lol

It is not displacement. The props (massive props) push a column of water from the front to the rear of the ship. That propels the ship forward but also stacks up water in back of the ship. After the ship passes, the water level stabilizes again.

There is a huge portion of the ship under water. They will usually only displace water and cause a wave when they are carrying a full load. Some ships come through here at twice that speed, but barely create a wake since they are riding high with no load. The heavier the load, the lower they sit in the water, and the more water they displace. The props really don’t have much affect on the wave action. The channel is probably about 60 to 80 feet deep. They dredged it out again about 8 months ago, and they had a set limit of 80ft.

That kind of ship can have a draught of 20m, can be more than 300m long and 50m wide, so it's a huge amount of water, nearly 300000 tons, that is displaced. (This one is perhaps not as big)
