Oily Hands Diesel Day 2013 - Saturday

What a fantastic weekend it was. Almost perfect weather for free flight planes, with only a few getting lost in the canola fields (why do they always paint their planes yellow?). The "FF plane of the meet" this year was MIMI, by Ray Malstrom, and quite a few were on hand - including a R/C conversion. The regular events and competitions were held - .049 flying rag mass launch, the Cowra Plank CL race, free flight scramble, and new for this year was the catapult launch glider scramble. It was noted that some of the "old hands" had brought their grand kids along to run the glider back to the start position - stretching the rules a little perhaps?

I watch this and I swear, I see double. A bunch of old duffers... but at the same time, superimposed over them, smiling, earnest young men with crew cuts, maybe glasses, kidding each other and showing the kind of enthusiasm you found back in the 1960s.

I remember them all from my youth, partly from the catalogue... and also the flat nose and distorted face I got, from pressing it up against the hobby shop window every afternoon, on the way back home from school... 🥴 My OLDER brother owned the Stuka, with free spinning siren props as I recall, and who could forget the fully droppable bomb, with the back of the box having a target printed on it, if memory serves? We started the motor often... which was always a thrill when it finally sparked after numerous failed attempts... but he also never flew it! 🥺🤷🏻‍♂️ My YOUNGER brother eventually bought a special edition (shiny!) “Silver Hurricane” (can’t remember if that was made by Cox too). That also never got flown 😢 until I finally took it to MY school one day, where a control-line enthusiast offered to fly it for me, which he successfully accomplished without mishap(!) 🤗 albeit on control lines that had to be adjusted far too short, because of the limited space we chose to fly it in... 😬 I doubt that his head has stopped spinning yet! 🤦🏻‍♂️🤕 Happy Days! 😂👍

It did 'try' to fly, but with little success. I've watched a few of these struggle into the air and they usually go home in a bag.

It is to do with the love of all things mechanical, the smell of burnt diesel fuel in your clothes when you get home and of course oily hands. Although they are not everyone's cup of tea, here is a great satisfaction to be had from fiddling with compression and needle settings to get one running just so.
