To all of the people saying that the Mandarin spoken sounds strange: you're right, it's not perfect. There could have been more practice made to make the actors sound more comfortable speaking northern style Mandarin. I am an American Born Chinese (ABC) and I immediately noticed the accents too. However, I know they were trying their hardest. Could the accents been better? OF COURSE! I'm sure many native Spanish, Russian, Dutch and German speakers who watched OITNB and saw the characters speak those languages also have criticism about pronunciation, accents, words, etc. I think these actors would have benefited from a whole Mandarin language research team, Mandarin language coaching, collaboration with the writers, a visit to China, etc. But what can you expect from an American TV show? It could be better, YES! But at least they featured Mei Chang's back story for everyone to learn about. It can always be better. But please, have mercy on those of us who are still learning how to speak Chinese, even though we grew up in Chinese families. It's hard to be Chinese American -- your Chinese language may not sound 100% authentic, even when you're trying your hardest. Chinese people don't see you as 100% Chinese, and American people don't see you as one of them either. And then people judge you on your English. I really want to be 100% comfortable in both English and Chinese one day. I have learned to accept other people's judgment while I am on my journey.

Poussey's German is almost unintelligible. It sounds like someone was off screen reading the lines which she immediately mimicked back without and practice. Tbh without the subtitles in those scenes, I think I would have understood less than half.

you could give me a lifetime to learn a language and i wouldnt get the accent right (biggest criticism from my spanish instructors tbh) no one besides the ppl of the same language get to say shit abt how actors' accents are. or anybody's. its not easy.

I was born and raised in mainland China and these American Chinese actors/actresses all have this (A bit weird to me) "American" Chinese accent that you cannot find in China. I guess hiring American citizens instead of authentic Chinese is always easier
@juliette71514 жыл бұрын
Some of the actors sound Taiwanese
@DesignzRUs14 жыл бұрын
“Authentic Chinese” what’s that supposed to mean? At the end of the day, they’re still of Chinese descent, doesn’t make them any less because they’re American citizens. You should be happy Asians in general are getting roles. They’re sadly not represented here in the North American market.
@garryhan54804 жыл бұрын
DesignzRUs1 Hello. The setting in this scene is that Chang is from Hebei, China so by nature she is supposed to sound like a native Chinese speaker. It has nothing to do with them being Americans or not. I was merely focusing on the plot
@lucyuen4 жыл бұрын
I think it's a bit too harsh to ask them to cast all Chinese actors who are from Mainland China in a TV show when there are plenty of East Asian actors in American are waiting for this role. However, in reality, for probably ALL Chinese movies, they will just cast a random white person (could be from Russia can't even speak german but mandarin) to act as a German when this product is made in China.
@christinayates24964 жыл бұрын
DesignzRUs1 authentic Chinese.. meaning people actually FROM China. Not people who simply are Asian and speaking a language just because they’re hired to.... An American learning Russian will never sound the same as a native Russian speaking Russian. Vice versa... the concept really isn’t that hard to understand. The same way “Red” isn’t actually Russian... and “Vee” was clearly an islander not an African American NY’er .
