Ok, Ok! I got some Prismacolor Coloring Pencils to see what all the fuss is about... Review time!

Previously I told you that I would not spend "good money" on pencils that had such poor quality control issues. However I came across a bargain that I couldn't pass on - $80 for the full 150 colors on the Wallmart marketplace. So... can they convince me that they are worth the hype and better than my Derwents, Faber-Castells or Luminance?
I've gone back to my order history on Wallmart and they are already back up to over $120 :( but if you keep an eye out the marketplace seller on there was called: wesaveyou$.

Due to the discontinued 2 colors the sets are popping up on clearance prices across the States at the moment.
I have tried to make this an honest review and it may upset the Prisma super fans. But if you hear my reasons and look at the evidence yourself then you'll see what I mean.

For whatever it's worth, I have never had any problems with my Prismas breaking, and I'm sure I've got the same percentage that are off-center. What you say about how they work - can't hold a point, smooshy, etc. - all that is certainly true. I don't think that's a quality issue, it's just how these pencils work. A lot of people love Polychromos, but they're too had for me, I just don't like them. I don't want to discount the experience of people who've said they've had problems with Prismas breaking, but I just want to put out my experience of not having that problem at all. Considering how wicked expensive Luminance are - or even Polychromos - I think Prismas are a really good price for a nice pencil. In between student and professional grade.

Hi Rita thank you for your comment. I agree they are quite unique in the way they color (which is good or bad depending on how you color and what you like). This video came about because I think a lot of people starting out only know of Prismas because of their reputation from their golden age and how widely they are used on KZbin etc. I think though is that there are way more student / hobbiest grade pencils on the market now with far superior quality control at the same price point. I've been looking a lot at the Derwent catalogue for example and they have the Chromaflows, Procolours and Coloursofts all readily available, with differences in softness/hardness etc and much cheaper than their Lightfast pencils - and most shoppers don't need to pay full price for them online because if you wait long enough one of the big stores always have them on offer. Plus an academy line which is their student grade for even more of a budget. And then there's all the other even more budget friendly options popping up like Black Widow, Brutfuner, Artex, Castle Arts, even Amazon's own brand which seem ideal for anyone wanting to get started without spending a fortune. Ideally though I think we'd like Prisma to step up and go back to being a quality pencil like they used to be.

I also bought the Caren D’ache but I don’t like the colours, I use a lot of pastel shades & I was disappointed with the colour selection for Caren D’ache. I feel like they are better for nature rather than psychedelic or modern & abstract. To be honest I have Holbein & a bunch of others too but at the end of the day the pencils I use the most are Brutfuner & Phoenixcolor 😹

Agree with the polychromos comments. Those are really well made quality pencils with a really good palette, but they are SO slow to use.

Learning how to use these takes time but it's so worth it. I've been colouring for years now, and bought these early on in my journey. I was seriously underwhelmed, but my view changed drastically once I had more experience. I've used a lot of these over the years and honestly haven't had many quality issues which negatively impacted their lay down. I've had one pencil which wouldn't sharpen properly. I do have Polychromos (which I love), Pablo's, Holbein, Luminance and Lightfast sets. I also have 8 different budget friendly sets. I have to say that I reach for Prisma and Polychromos most of the time. Years into this hobby, I realise that I wasted a lot of money on supplies which I seldom use.

Three years ago I bought a half price set of 150 Prismacolor Premier pencils and was so excited when they came. Until I opened them. I found a lot of off-center cores, broken leads, etc. Not nearly as bad as what you found. I called Newell and they didn't even ask for the set back, but sent me a new set. They were no better. I called Newell again, and they offered me three sets of Prismacolor Scholars, which I could not even find on their website. I passed, picked out the best of the two boxes of Premiers and made a set out of those. It was still a set I would never brag about. In fact, I am only now, three years later, swatching them and intend to use them sometimes. My sets were off-center about half the time. To be considered off-center, it had to be more than just a hair off. I didn't consider a hair off to be a problem. There were enough that were half-off or almost that bad, none of which should have passed quality control. I noticed in the handful of off-centered ones you showed in your set, there were several I would not have considered actually belonging in "shouldn't have passed quality control". You are pickier than I am, which is fine. You do you. I do think it toasted the testing of them, and made them seem worse than they are, which is bad enough without making them seem worse than they are. I haven't colored with them yet, so I don't know if I will find them as bad as you did. I prefer to use a light hand, so I hope to avoid the shine and smush. Unless the sale is really great, I can't afford Prismacolor Premiers, let alone the more expensive pencils. This is as good as I can get, although I actually get along quite well with budget sets, even the old Crayolas. Haven't tried the new Crayolas. The Prismacolor Premiers left a bad taste in my mouth which I am only just now on the threshhold of finally using, so I really hope I like them better in use than you did. Thank you for the review. We've all been warned. ((If they really are that bad, why do so many people swear ON them rather than AT them?))

I agree, I put off getting them for so long because of all the complaints... and yet they are still the most popular pencil?! I think it's because they were the flagship pencil when they were better quality and we were very limited with choice in the pencil market. So I think it's more of a legacy popularity / reputation that they're holding onto. I wouldn't have paid $100 for the full set because I can't see that I'll prefer them over other similar priced pencils that we can get today. I probably should have done more closeups of my cores - basically anything that didn't look off on a quick passing glance made the "OK" pile (under more scrutiny they are not perfectly centered but I tried to be reasonable and draw the line somewhere, if I have to get a tool out to measure then I agree they are perfectly fine) but for all the others there was definitely a clear shift. I think, like anything, if you spend many hours with a pencil you'll work out the way it likes to be used and I just found it so different to my other pencils. For me it wasn't that they are completely rubbish I just found that they didn't bring out the best of my coloring technique, they were very messy and I didn't find the smooshiness to make them enjoyable to use as I found myself almost chasing the pigment around and ending up patchy instead of getting smooth blends. I'm using them on another coloring page (with my Derwent Coloursoft) to see if I can enjoy them anymore. But mainly I just would like to see them improve their quality control and stop wasting money of the coloring communities. And for sure, I definitely don't recommend them at anything above bargain price! I'd rather recommend that people try a few open stock Derwent pencils to pick the feel that works best for them (they have many different ranges now) and it's another one you don't have to pay full price for on the sets because all the big stores regularly have sales :)

Since theirs manufactured are now done in Mexico for a less cost production, theirs quality are not there anymore! But they are still good coloured pencils since I was a little girl in 1967 which the manufacturer was Sanford! I might wrong, but read on Wikipedia for the story of these coloured pencils! I got my first set of the 150 over 5 years ago and paid $80. My second set, I bought 2 years ago and they cost $78. Yes, I wait for sales on ALL my supplies, it saves money and allows me to buy more. Prismacolor isn’t my favorite I love my Polychromos and Derwent pencils more!🥴😘

Honestly, I don't understand the trashing of Prismacolors. It's an accessible medium and they are a joy to use. Most of the problems aren't that serious. They're easily attainable for $130, and often less.

The trick for off center ones is to wrap then in towel, then a heating pad around them on med- high for 15-20 mins. Let them cool, it will take a while. You are now good to go! It softens the wax just enough so even if it's off center it is now adhered to the wood casing and you should stop get that tip that keeps falling out of the pencil when you sharpen. Hope this helps someone!!

I think Prisma has the nicest color selection, but I would never pay more than 50 cents per pencil. 75-80 bucks for the full150 set is about right.

I bought 4 sets of these pencils from Michael’s online I got them on sale, but when I opened them up and inspected/swatched them, I guessed that was why they were on sale in the first place. I suppose it’s a permanent sale on the Michael’s site, as it’s usually on there… but with how horrid the QC was, it’s no wonder. I enjoy using Prismacolor pencils, but with how many messed up pencils there are, they should be a WHOLE LOT less expensive! There were a bunch that looked like they’d literally been chewed on, and I couldn’t see the names of the colors or the numbers, so I had to open another box to get the names off those pencils in order to label them. There were a BUNCH that were cracked all the way down the middle or scratched up in varying degrees of severity. The pigment in the Electric Blue colored pencil is consistently scratchy (across every set I’ve got, as well as every single one of the open stock ones I’ve come across). Then there were the offsets. That is BY FAR the worst issue that I’ve seen. There were very few good quality pencils in these sets, but if I had to guess, about 75%-80% of my Prismacolor Premiers were off center to the point where if I want to use them, I have to get my dremel and try to even it out after I sharpen them. A couple were not usable at all. Those I replaced with open stock pencils from the store. I was surprised at the number of decent quality open stocks my Michael’s store had. There were some slightly offset cores in those, but for the most part, those are of a pretty reliably decent quality. I have a niece who is in her first year at art school. I was going to give her one of these sets I bought, but when I saw how bad the quality was, I said no way!! I CANNOT GIVE THIS AS A GIFT! 😳😕

I'm glad we're all starting to talk about this publicly to be honest, it upsets me that people are spending their money thinking they're getting the best when... well... the price point just isn't justified. That's an interesting point about the open stock being the better ones, I wonder if that's intentional. But at least the buyer can inspect before purchase (although you won't know how much they've been knocked about.)

From across the pond physically and Prisma wise. If you got a bad batch I feel sorrow. It can happen. I really am wondering if you inadvertently purchased a counterfeit set of pencils. I haven't seen Prismas for $80USD in years. As of today Amazon's price for the 150 set from the Prisma store is $137.41USD. Another comment here sorta compared those of us who love Prismas to those who use Crayolas. It's as though we've been brainwashed years ago. Many of us use both brands and the two are a galaxy apart in how they color. Crayola's are hard as a rock and require a light touch while layering. Prismas super soft wax blend or as you say "smooch." If you use anything other than a light touch you will fail with the Premier pencils. The characteristics of each pencil needs to match the characteristics of the paper. No pencil does beautifully in all coloring books. In over ten years of Prisma use I've encountered only one cracked pencil out of several sets purchased. When I first started watching adult coloring on KZbin people were pushing Polychromos not Prismacolor pencils. Polys were/are still very expensive here much the same way Prismas are expensive outside the US. I'm almost 80 and must live on a very fixed budget. I can't even afford to dream of owning pencil sets such as Holbien or Luminance. Prismas have been/remain my cup of tea - 150 glorious colors to choose and blend.

I live in Australia and these pencils are expensive here, somewhere between $190ish to $ 250 + depending on the seller, even Amazon Au… Over 20 years ago I was fortunate enough to receive a set of 24 - in those days they still had Berol as part of their signature. About 10 years ago when the colouring book phenomenon took off I bought a bigger set and straight away noticed a difference in the quality… At first I thought I had been unfortunate to have purchased a faulty set - especially when my Poppy Red sharpened away to a stub at a rapid rate after breaking continually … As the colouring community became larger I discovered I wasn’t alone with my badly made Prismas - not occasionally, but consistently disappointed and dissatisfied people voiced their concerns… I also saw that the colouring world seemed to be divided about them. I put my set aside and for a very long time I didn’t use them, but of late, I have re introduced them to my colouring stable… I have also added a few more colours however, have bought them from an reputable art shop which has open stock.. I choose them carefully and so far that has been most beneficial but a little more expensive… I do agree with your observations re colouring, smudging and crumbs and I am careful how I use them and what colouring books I use them in… Thanks for this vid as it has confirmed my own thoughts around these pencils… Take care

The fairest review of Prismacolors Premier I have seen! They are indeed very soft and they melt on the paper, and that can make them enjoyable and very forgiving, and also suitable for fast projects. I have them and I use them, but I have thrown away 5 or 6 of them as the core was so damaged that I just couldn't get a nib with them and that was just disappointing. I also have Polychromos and Derwents and Lumies and that is maybe why I wholeheartedly consider your review the fairest. The overall experience depends very much on what your goals are and maybe on what you have used before them. If switching from very hard children's coloring pencils to Prisma is like discovering heaven. If you try them out after Polychromos, Derwent, Lumies... a whole different story

I am like you in that I prefer and grew up with harder, less waxy pencils like polychromos (my childhood faves were Derwent and Supracolor, which I used dry) and applying them lightly and evenly to build up layers (with no scratchy pencil marks showing). I had always been confused by seeing KZbin videos of American artists and artists from other countries who learned from them all holding their pencils like crayons and going in at max pressure, full saturation from the second the lead hit the paper, creating lots of really hard, scratchy pencil marks (this would look to me like how toddlers colour before they learn how to use colouring pencils) and very hard blends and then essentially (this is how it looked to me at the time!) needing other tools (blenders, white pencils, solvents, etc) to hide the marks and blend the pencils into each other more seamlessly. I could not understand why they would do that rather than just simply go in lightly and build up. And then... I bought a box of Prismacolor and realised why. I always thought pencils were the same everywhere, but Prismacolor-style pencils seem to essentially be a different medium. Initially I absolutely hated them, because they would go down really waxy and I could not do my even layered lay-down with them (it would end up looking blotchy and crayon-like), but then I realised that in essence they are like artist grade wax pastels, just with a thinner lead and with a wooden barrel. I now treat them as such and I use them for detail on top of my Neocolor I, or instead of my Neocolor Is if I am drawing in a very tiny sketchbook. I absolutely adore the Neocolor I and use them regularly but they handle completely differently to pencils, and Prismas are more related to them than to the pencils I grew up with in Europe - I think that to treat all these wonderful pencils like the same medium does them all disservice. I think this is also the reason why Americans don't tend to like non-American pencils as much - they try to use them like Prismacolors (I see this so often in videos), whereas in a way they apply more like graphite (you would't lay down graphite like crayon, it would look scratchy and unsubtle as hell - you would slowly build it up applying it with even pressure).

I bought into the Prismacolor craze, because I was just getting started with adult coloring and the coloralongs and tutorials I was trying to learn from were basically all using Prismacolor. Almost two years later, I very seldom use them. I had a lot that were off center, broken cores, and didn’t really like them. I bought the Verithins and every one of them is drastically off center. I now have FC Polychromos, Caran D’Ache, and Derwent, Brutfuner 520’s and squares, Starjoy Gold, Schpirerr Farben, Indra, Crayola Black Widows and if I want a soft mushy pencil I’ll go to my Brutfuner squares or Black Widows. In my best coloring books I use my top of the line pencils.

Thanks for the video. I love hearing other artists' critique of art supplies. I got back into drawing during lockdown in 2020, and I agree with everything both good and bad said about Prismacolor Premiers. I only have a set of 72, they're not my favorite and I've found that any more colors than that don't help me. I get them out when I'm drawing on toned paper, because I do think they're more opaque than the others I favor (I prefer Faber Castell Durer Watercolor pencils or Derwent Inktense most of the time) but dry pencil isn't generally what I do. There are quality issues with a few, but the overall experience is still positive. The white pencil is better than most and is worth having around even if you mostly use other brands. They also aren't as expensive as the other brands I mentioned. Did they hang the moon? No. But I think they give an artist an excellent tool for making art, and that's what I want.

I did find them quite opaque as my picture had a lot of solid black so that could be a big plus in some instances... now I'm wondering how they compare to the Faber-Castell black edition though (sadly not open stock so I can't compare just a white). But definitely a good white on hand is essential :)

I have them. The quality control doesn’t bother me as mine are all good. I’m lucky. I bought them from Cult Pens, but they no longer sell them. I wanted to see what all the hype is about. But although I enjoy using them now and then, I don’t use them often. I’m a light layers colourist. I love Pablos, Polys etc. but there is some stunning work out there using Prismas. I don’t reach for them often. They are very expensive and elusive in the U.K.

That's good to hear yours were all good - it's definitely pot luck. There will be people who look at my set and think I got lucky with mine and others that won't agree because they got even luckier. For example I only had one pencil with a crack on it, but a lady shared in one of the facebook groups a literal handful of cracked ones in her box. Doesn't seem to be many checks happening at the factory :/ Have you tried Derwents? In the UK make sure you're on the mailing list for Cass Art too as they do lots of regular offers. I love my Polys and am become quite a Derwent fan girl now lol!

@@WhatBeckyDidLastNightOfficial I love Derwent Pencils. Especially the Drawing Pencils, and the Procolour. I like hard pencils so I even like the Artist pencils. Not so keen on Coloursoft and I don't have the Cromaflow. Their watercolour pencils are nice too, muted. I buy my Prisma open stock from the coloured pencil shop, and online UK shop. I do have a few Prismas with a crack in the barrel, but not bad enough to worry about. I believe it's just that they were not glued well enough.

I don't even know what to say. This was a hit piece from the word go. There is nothing wrong with Prismacolor, they are one of the most popular choices for top artists and have been for decades. Every brand has a dud now and then. Every brand has inconsistent cores, they just cap the ends to they are harder to see. People who have major issues with them breaking simply either don't know how or don't bother to treat them properly.. they are the softest core there is and can do things no other brand on the market can do. You can literally lay down pigment and spread it across paper like butter on toast. Cores that soft require proper handling, storage, and most importantly proper sharpening. Using a dull single blade twist sharpener is death to them and the #1 cause of a cracked core. They also have one of if not the best color palette of any professional pencil. They do wear down quickly.. because of that extreme softness. They certainly do have lightfast ratings and a simple Google search would tell you that. I'll be sure to mention to Chris Chang that she is a lazy, messy artist who could be better if she would just use a more "professional" pencil LOL.

Hi I think you misunderstood what I said. I mentioned that I've seen amazing artists create stunning work with these pencils. I said that I felt almost lazy using these pencils because of MY style of colouring and what I've been using for many years, so please don't misquote me. I also mentioned that I can see the appeal of these pencils. What I'm reviewing here are the quality control issues that are widely reported on social media versus the price that they charge for them compared to similar priced pencils. I feel like I was very fair to these pencils (after all I wanted a good experience as I spent my own hard earned money on them) and this is my opinion and other people have their opinion and we can all coexist happily in the coloring community 😊

My "thing" with Prisma is the amount of pencils I have bought open stock - because of the cracking of nibs particularly in the Tuscan Red and Cadmium Orange Hue- that end up shorties an hour later from sharpening! I thought it was the sharpener, the paper, the style, etc. - but the expense for now is not worth it, so I have put them away or used them sparingly because they don't work for me. This is compounded by my original set came with two identical Violets and no Dioxazine Purple Hue. I may just have a "fake" set and not know it.

I just watched an interesting video on "fake" prismas and the rabbit hole goes even deeper... apparently primas do not have any authorized resellers in UK/EU/Africa since they can not distribute there... and so it's not quite clear where the distribution chain leads and which batch numbers are out there........... The whole prisma story sounds more suspicious and scandalous the more I dig into it.

Just looking at this, I'm guessing you got a non-legit set. Not a copy. You did get actual prismas, I think. But, they are not good ones. I really think you got factory rejects that someone picked out of the trash.

YEAH finally someone willing to give an UNBIASED and honest review. It seems you Can't go 5 seconds on you tube without all these US colourists mentioning the P word. Plus the pressure it puts on new colourists that these pencils will solve all your colouring issues, not intentional i'm sure but the message is implicitly there. Use these they are the best!! no effing way. As for trying to get open stock. As for complaining they don't care. They are over priced and over hyped. I have seen these reach nearly £200 for a set not including the £32 postage to the UK. I caved in and bought a small set at a effing exorbitant price one year. I don't know what some people consider reasonably priced but 120 brutfuners was a lot less than the crappy 12 set i bought. Within 5 minutes I was having to sharpen them and a quarter were already looking mangled and falling to bits the remainder just melted to nothing and im not a heavy handed colourist by any means. It would indeed be a boring world if we all liked the same thing............................... but surely the reputation of the company from its berol days needs to be revived if they are to compete with the much classier Faber Castell and endearing quality of Derwent. I mean the other day a saw a YT video where some knock off P dupes were a better quality pencil than the real thing. FFS and they were a fraction of the cost. So I urge all colourists of the world who aren't from the US of A to forget these crappy things and wake up to yourselves. that's just my 2 cents worth. thank you.

While I sure appreciate the quality checking you did. It sure sounds like you were trying to make them into crayons and had no respect for the instrument that they are. Mushing them into the paper to fill the paper tooth is not the way to use them. Color the way you normally do with light layers and Prismas are wonderful pencils that can layer and blend. Btw- Prismas will become softer in a hot environment like outside in summer. The mess you had was because of how you used them, not due to the pencils. Also I’ve had my sets of Prismas for years and never had a negative issue with any that had off center cores or cracks, and out of multiple pencils I’ve purchased I had one pencil that broke repeatedly and I lost half the pencil. One out of approx three hundred pencils is not an issue for me.

Yes I think I covered that when I described my coloring style. I also have hand issues (in case you miss that I drop things a lot in my videos and sometimes have to change my pencil hold technique) so it's actually nothing to do with "respect" and yet I get along really well with other pencils and know how to build up light layers. I'm also not the only one who shares these views of these pencils. You raise an interesting point about the age of your pencils. The quality complaints (which are vast from many many other people) seem to be more apparent since more recent production changes. Also open stock pencils seem to be better than the pre-tinned ones. All we're asking for is that quality control improves or the price point comes down to match the quality. Happy New Year.Also open stock pencils seem to be better than the pre-tinned ones.

Since this video I've gone through their own courses with their technique kits. My opinion on their price to quality issues still stand. The people who hate the quality control standards are also not wrong.

Hi Shelly I just looked on Wallmart website in my order history to see if that deal is still on and sadly it isn't at the moment (it was a third party seller called wesaveyou$ so maybe they buy up liquidation stock?). I know that some sellers on Amazon have been discounting some sets (recently I saw a smaller set listed for a bargain) - I'd also keep an eye on places like Blicks and Jacksons online.
